So it hit the news this morning that the South African based company Steinhoff International is to take over the British discount store Poundland. They've settled on the figure of £597m, so a bit more than just £1 :)It's a bit weird that I decided to go out and shoot the local high street the other day and took a few editorial shots of shop signs. Poundland was one of the shops I decided to photograph. Here's the image (it's vertical so you'll have to click on it to... continue reading

Okay, so it's been a while since my last post and, if you recall, my last DT blog was fairly negative in calling out people who do not pay for using stock images. That I'm afraid is a perennial problem, which isn't likely to go away any time soon. And anyway, I like to think that my posts are more about helping and entertaining people than moaning about stuff I can't control! So, with that in mind, I wanted to write a short piece on stock photography. It's something I've wanted to write for a while... continue reading
You may have heard of the social media sensation @FuckJerry, or perhaps not. I hadn't until I had just read a Forbes magazine interview with the man behind the FuckJerry handle, Elliot Tebele. He seemed like just another guy who is making some waves across well known social media platforms.I was intrigued, and so searched for him on a well known picture sharing site. His account was instantly recognizable, especially since it now has a "verified" tick on it. I scrolled down the posts, mostly... continue reading
Every month Dreamstime offers contributors a chance to contribute images to the "on assignment" competition. Contributors can opt to make accepted images Level 5 right off the bat. Every month I think to myself that I'll give it a whirl, but never actually get round to it. Well, this month, the assignment was for images of Landmarks of Underrated Towns. Given that I live in the beautiful county of Cornwall in the UK, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to submit something this time round. Cornwall... continue reading
** Disclaimer: Before I begin, I need to make it clear that none of the stunning images contained in this post were taken by me! **I read somewhere this week that cassette tapes are going to be making a comeback in 2016. This got me to thinking about the sort of images that are likely to be in demand this year too. Technology is always in high demand, and so it is logical that photos, vectors and illustrations of technology should also be. Even though I know this, and I like to... continue reading
I don't know about you, but photography is something that gives me real pleasure. It's nearly always on my mind: planning the next project; scoping out new places to shoot; reading as much as I can about new techniques; appreciating other photographers' work; checking out the window to assess the light; scouring a well known auction site to look for my next longed-for piece of equipment. But, as is true for many of us, the "day job" can be a major obstacle to growing my photography portfolio.... continue reading
Okay, so it's taken 6 months, but I finally have my first sale on DT! That $0.35 has made my day :) Hopefully now the floodgates will open and more sales will follow. However, I do think I need to re-keyword my images--and upload lots more--to stand any chance of making regular sales. Never mind #motivationmonday it must be #midweekmotivation :)For those interested this is the picture I sold continue reading
If there's one subject that we're told not to photograph for stock photography, it's flowers. And yet many of us take great joy in practicing our art and technique on a subject that does not require a model or property release. Moreover, flowers are ubiquitous: they are everywhere. How dull would life be without the beauty of flowers? My first ever sale in stock photography (albeit not on DT) was of flowers. In fact most of my stock sales have been of flowers and plants. Maybe it's because... continue reading
