Although I'm not a "professional" wedding photographer. I love shooting weddings especially shooting details such as flower arrangements and of course wedding cakes. In the last couple of years, many of my friends got married and I had a lot of weddings to attend with my SLR camera ;) but quickly realized that many of the "hire" photographers didn't have much time to shoot these details so I agreed to shoot them for many of my friends.
I love shooting wedding cakes the most since it is one of the items in wedding that takes a lot of time to pick out and produce aside from the wedding dress of course. There are so many different styles and colours of cakes. It starts with the bride and groom going through countless wedding magazines and seeing many bakers to determine the right cake design that matches their individual style and theme of the wedding. Then the baker spends hours to produce the cake of their dreams.
My job is to capture the cake's mood and feeling for the bride and groom. The key is to balance the light between the foreground which is the cake and the background banquet hall setting. The best way is to shoot in full manual both on the camera and the flash so you can adjust the exposure of each separately to produce a natural photo that represents the mood of the setting.
Alas, most of my friends are now married and only attended two wedding this year. We'll have to see how next summer will be like... maybe my wife's younger cousins will start getting married ;)
So the next time you see a wedding cake, remember how much time and effort was needed and CAPTURE IT!!!
Below is a link of a collection of wedding cakes. Some of which are of my own and some of other contributors. Enjoy.
