Christchurch Earthquake

Hi all,

I live in Christchurch, New Zealand, which as some of you may know suffered a 7.1 earthquake on Saturday morning.

Siince then we've had over 300 aftershocks and I thought people might bve interested in this map which shows the quakes as a timeline and their depth and intensity. http://ow.ly/1qPKcG

Our Emergency responders have done an amaizing job and within hours most of the city had electricity, withing days we could use the sewewreage system and yesterday got the all clear for our drinking water.

I'd like to say a big thank you to all of them who have and are helping us through this difficult time. This is all the more remarkable considering that some will also have had damage to their homes aswell.

I've also uploaded a few images of the destruction the quake caused.

Our house lost both chimneys and damaged our hot water cylinder and a few other items but we've got off lightly compared to some who have lost everything.

Up until yesterday most people had been doing very well. I think we were on a kind of survivors high - if there is such a thing. But yesterday there was a very strong sharp aftershock and this scared a lot of people. It was the first time since the big one that my wife and I grabbed the kids and hit the floor.

I think for most it highlighted the fact that this was not yet over for us. The seismic experts are saying that we could still get another shock of 6.1 any time in the next 2 weeks. Not looking forward to that.

On the brighter side just got our hot water fixed and the chimneys are due to be done tomorrow. We've had no deaths and the city emergency responders are doing an amazing job.

Glad to hear you are okay. I have family in Christchurch too that have also lost their chimney. Luckily they live in a wooden house. Best wishes from us here in Huntly :)
