About Earth Day

A Clean Earth

We guard the water quality of our lakes in the area where I live and take great care with cleaning the shorelines and waterways. The water is tested regularly and people are fined or taken to court if they mistreat the precious resource. The county I live in is about 95% National Forest and it is well taken care of. We have a very good recycle business in the county which makes a good income for the area. Each lake has a civic association which keeps watch on things and gets the word out if help is needed or a problem is encountered. We try hard and it's mostly all volunteer. It's a rural area, we don't have shopping malls or many fast food joints. With all we do it is soooo irritating to see beer cans and food wrappers on the sides of the roads!! Junk cars are still in some yards and old tires are yard art. Some people insist upon using the area around their homes as a dump.....any clean area ordinance is just ignored by a few. But, we have "come a long way baby"!! Here's hoping it keeps coming along!

Hope more and more people realise the value of trees and natural surroundings.
You are lucky to stay in an area of National Forest .

Thanks, gals, I love it here but then I know people who have to be in the big city and can't imagine living full time in this area. They like to use it for recreation, of course.

Hey Susan, So wonderful to hear that people are taking pride in their communities and protecting our natural resources. We have community "beach pick up" days here. It is sad and infuriating to pick up litter left by the inconsiderate; I especially detest the cigarette butts and feel that if one is caught dropping one the penalty should require them to eat it. Happy Earth Day!

You must live in an exceptional area! Continue to care maybe others will learn from your community.

Cheers Susan :D I'm just fed up with greedy people and their lack of concern for others. I'm glad that there are people where you live that are willing to protect the environment, it looks like a beautiful area. I found this quote today that fits the theme of Earthday and caring for our environment too:

"We need to consider how our actions, in affecting the environment, are likely to affect others. This is often difficult to judge; but it is clear that we are the only species with the power to destroy the earth. Birds and insects have no such power, nor does any other mammal. Yet if we have the capacity to destroy the earth, we also have the capacity to protect it. I believe we have an urgent responsibility to do so." - The Dalai Lama

Wow, 95% of National Forest: you seem to live in a wonderful place! But I think that also people living in the town or in big cities must pay attention to environment, as much as you're doing and even more if possible ;)

Great images Susan! At the moment here in New Zealand we're fighting drought around where I live. Any rain we have been getting is very light and not helping much.

We're also fighting a stupid government plan to mine in seven places in some of our conservation land! Greed and politicians urgh! they won't be happy until we all live in a hole in the ground. Still, we're not going down without a fight. Greenpeace Aotearoa New Zealand is gathering people for a march in Auckland, lower Queen street, 1st May at 11am. International supporters are welcome :D Sorry for high-jacking your blog Susan :)

Happy Earth Day.
Continuing the importance of clean water consciousness and protection of our watershed. Here's an anecdote.
My first visit to the lovely country of Tunisia, being my first visit to the continent of North Africa too.... hopefully not my last .
I climbed to the summit of Mount Chenini a berber village ,one of the original communities of Africa. While at the summit, a berber lady with ,her brother or son, walked by. She was poor and her shoes were ill fitted that her feet was blueblack. She smiled at me and I asked to take some photos of them. She smiled. Finally, I wanted to give her some dinars but I only had large bills. So I gave her the only thing I had , a 2 litre bottle of Spring Water I bought from Tunis. And some chewing gum, lol. She smiled like I gave her the keys to heaven. Another berber boy saw this and started to talk loudly to her, as if she should not take it from me. I didn't know why since I can't speak their language or just simple Arabic, which I am sure it wasn't the Berber language. But I gestured to the girl with my prayer hands closed together to say, as if , please it's my wish !.
Anyway, to cut this short..
On my way down, I met my guide and told him how terrible I felt not to be able to give this sweet poor but happy girl some money for maybe food and new shoes. The guide told me, "to these people, water is survival. They have to port water from the community well. Sometimes there is no water due to drought . You gave her Spring Water which is like wine to you. She probably has not tasted this water. You gave her the best thing her people consider a gift of life... water !"
It taught me one great lesson. In our land and society of plenty, there are many things we take for granted.
HAPPY EARTH DAY.

never would have thought Susan! But now that you mention, yes, it's true. In my neighborhood is one of the three most polluted rivers in the world... And they were big companies that pollute.

April 22, 2010

Noonie

Artificial in Dubai?? Who would have known, LOL!! I'll tell you a secret, Claudio, some of the messy places I'm talking about aren't poor people, just stubborn ones. The families have always lived like that and don't want to change! And one lake polluter was a very expensive golf course!!!

April 22, 2010

Creativei

I wish even I can live near that lake, I'm tired of this artificial life in Dubai.

Yesterday, was allowed a plant pulp processing in Uruguay, by an international tribunal. I swam in the river where they set up the plant, and I assure you that you could drink the water of that river. Unfortunately, poverty and ignorance are the best allies of pollution.
Beatiful illustrations Susan!
