Estatic about Extended License Sales
I've been on Dreamstime since end of October 2007 and made my first P-EL sale in the month of January 2008. At the time being very new to stock photography, I didn't really know what that meant but I was just happy to get a $25 boost in my sales. I figured the P-EL sales are rare and probably may not see another one again. So I didn't bother reading what kinda of sale it really was. Here was the photo that I had my first P-EL sale.
But to my surprise, I hit the "Jackpot!!!" and sold another P-EL a few days ago with this photo.
I'm still not sure if P-EL sales are rare or common. I thought why would a designer really need to buy another license when they can print 500,000 copies with a RF license. But I figured I'd better know at least what kind of sale it really is. So a P-EL sale is a print usage sale. Here is it quote from dreamstime.
"Physical Items for Resale: includes the right to use the photos for t-shirts, postcards, greeting cards, mugs, mousepads, posters, calendars, framed artwork that is to be sold to other customers for a maximum amount of 10,000 copies (applies as a total of each type of usage). If this amount is exceeded you need to acquire this license once again. The new license will provide you with the standard amount of copies.
This is an additional license to the rights included within the regular Royalty-Free license. Note that the other restrictions still apply.
After I read this, I thought to myself. That's pretty cool. My photo may actually been sold on merchandise instead of just pamphlets and advertisements. Unlike RF sales which may not be used by the designers, P-EL has a higher likely of being used. The other cool part is that the limit is 10,000 copies. So hopefully if the merchandise with my photo sells well, than another P-EL may be required again. So I'm looking forward to seeing if I ever see a T-shirt with my photo on it. haha ;) If anyone does see it, let me know. Thanks.
I wonder when I will sell my first SR-EL. That would be cool.
