Found my photo on a book cover!

Every now and then I will do a tineye search on some of my photos. I was recently surprised to find that one my photos was used on a book cover!

My Cowboy in Dawn Light

photo was used along with a few others to make a collage. It is very thrilling to find artwork in use like this, but I do have a few questions.

If it was just my photo alone would they have to have purchased an extended license in order to use it? Does the fact that they use it in a collage change that? I noticed that there is a credit given to an artist for the cover art with her copyright, but there is no mention of the source of the photos or the photographer’s names.

I imagine this is all the legal way of doing book cover art, but what are the rules on this? I seem to remember reading that if a photo took up so much space, like more than half of the cover, then the original artist had to be given credit, does that sound familiar?

Anyway, I plan to order the book to have for a memento, even though it looks like a pretty racy plot! Here is the link to it if you are interested in taking a peek: [link=http://www.amazon.com/Cattle-Valley-Vol-Sweet-Topping/dp/1906590346/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_a[/link]

Thanks everyone for your comments! I received the book and it looks great. I am a bit concerned about what types of 'tailored' email I will be getting from Amazon now. I should have written to the author and asked for a complimentary (signed) copy as I read that someone else had done. maybe I should still do that! What do you think? :-)

Congratulations Laura! It looks great and plays a prominent element in the whole design so I'd love to hear the results of your research. That shot has always been one of my favorites in your port.

A big congrats.

I found an image also on a book of mine, but I think it was bought as just a high res image. They book was only available as digital option though, no printing.

Congratulations your finding!

About your questions the extended license is required if the number of print used exceeded the limit for normal RF use! Check this

Crediting the photographer is not an obligation unfortunately! The illustrator is credited for his/her final work & not about copy righted source in specific!
