After you've been traveling for a while, you start to accumulate many random kick-knacks from batiks to bowls. And your friends and family may sigh and say "yet another _______"? The truth is, when you have traveled, a lot souvenirs start to look the same. I've found very similar socks and mittens in both Kathmandu and Peru which made me question about where my gifts are actually coming from.
For me souvenirs are a little bit about the culture, not something that's mass replicated.
So what is a good gift then?
Maps and magazines. Maps because there are so many uses for them (and you can get some really amazing ones as well) and magazines because it shows the local culture. And let's not forget photography. Lots and lots of amazing pictures! The trick is though is to get them right before you leave the country. While maps are easy to pack, magazines are not. You don't want to lug something around if you don't have to.
Are there any magazines in your country that are popular or local that would be good souvenirs?
I enjoyed excellent idea this kind of picture, and gets a nice visual .. well I will have to walk the newsstands .. Thanks, Angela's Ostafichuk
Ha ha, yeah so damn right!
Personally i got "mapomania" - and talking about Peru, an interresting one is from the Nazca-lines...
