How to be your own model.

O.K. right off a lot of you are saying I'm nuts, or rinky dink for even thinking of being my own model for some people photos but please hear me out before you cast me off.

If you have not done a lot of people situation photos being your own model has many advantages. First it lets you compose the shot in your mind before adding the person. This is very good practice for when you start having other people for models. You would be very surprised what you see in a scene without the person in it . This helps you with everything from composition to background clutter and everything in between.

The main thing when doing this is to give yourself enough time to do the shoot.

After taking some shots you can look at them and decide what you would like to change and try again. The beauty of being your own model is it's only your time your investing.

As far as how it's done is very simple. There are several ways to get this accomplished. I prefer to use a wireless remote with my camera on the timer. Then I get situated where I want to be, reach in my pocket push the remote, put it back in the pocket and ten seconds later the shot is taken. The remote was under twenty bucks and works with auto focus or manual.

Of course you can simply use the timer by it self but then you need to use manual focus or focus on something the same distance as where you will be. And of course you have to run back and forth from the camera and tripod.

Now I'm not saying this method replaces ever using a real model but I am saying this is a very good learning tool that gets you more comfortable shooting model situational photos.

It's only a little time investment to give it a try.

Thanks for the comments, and yes the two photos in the article are done with this method.

Very useful! I know others do this and I'm going to give it a try. Now to think of some good situations

Have you had any images with you in them, [ self portraits ] accepted by Dreamstime ?

Very true but it is a lot more fun doing it with a friend.

Great article. Sometimes my daughter (my main model) is not in the mood or doesnt' have the time, so I'm thinking that I need to start experimentng by putting myself in the picture. Not as good a model but should work for some types of shots :)

Great idea! Thanks for sharing :0)

I've been thinking about this. Now that I see your success, I'm definitely going to try it. Great article!

Very useful article. I have to start doing this too.

its great to be your own model, because you don't have to pay anyone.

Thank you, that's exactly what I need now :)

yes, I did this too. I don't have a remote control for my camera but a simple wire release. That means it generally does not work with great distances.
Its very hard and a little frustrating at times to have only 10 seconds to be in position :D There were several cases when I simply didn't make it in time and the picture showed an empty chair :P

great article, i'll have to try it someday :)

Good article. I've been thinking of doing this too...
