How to take Photos at Night

I'm in Argentina updating my photos and website. You may have noticed that I have quite a few photos that are taken at night. It's my favourite time to shoot, but takes a bit more effort to get decent results. I've just finished updating my article on how to take photos at night, so thought I'd share the process I go through to get images that look like the ones here.
I use an Olympus Digital SLR, however the following tips apply equally to a Canon, Nikon or Sony camera: How to Take Photos at Night.
If, like me you use an Olympus DSLR, you may find this link more useful: How to take photos at night with an Olympus DSLR

And after 30 years of pics without tripod I'will start to use it :-)

Excellent article thank you! I've just upgraded from the e-400 to the E-30 and I'm really happy with it so far.

Another piece of advice, a strong sturdy tripod can double as a good deterrent :0)

Thanks for all the comments! Maybe another bit of advice should be: Go out with friends! In most places there's plenty to photograph in places that are perfectly safe - but I must say the photo from the Quito Old Town wasn't one of them. Walking back (alone!) probably wasn't the smartest thing - still it all went well!

I love night/twilight shots but tend to not go out with my camera at night :0(

Fantastic images! Thanks for the tips. I've had a go at taking our local powerstation at night (I live in a small town so no great cityscapes) and they came out better than I expected. Twilight is definitely a great time to take them. :0)

Very useful, especially since we in Scandinavia are entering the dark season. In december we will hardly see the sun at all. The few hours of light that are left then are all twilight :)

Absolutely first class advice and wonderful images. The only thing you dont say [ but do imply ] is that you need to be good with Photoshop in order to merge images ! David.

Great blog. Very informative as I also shoot with the Olympus e system. I have an E-3 with an E-510 backup and a 12-60 SWD lens and a 50-200 SWD lens. It is a great system.
for the information

I have read your article with the most interest as I use an Olympus DSRL and I am always struggeling with the exposure when taking pictures at that time of night. But than I must admit I am not always carrying a tripod or a beanbag with me. Thanks for this useful information. Your photo's are wonderful!
