I reached payout, YES!!

My yoga sunrise image on the left was the one that pushed my sales over the egde and got me the first payout that I’ve been striving for since April. I want to thank everyone who downloaded my images. It’s a real buzz knowing they have some worth.

I remember starting back in April wondering how I would reach my first payout with such a tiny portfolio that was swallowed up and buried deep into the DT monster of a search engine. In comparison to the majority of contributors, it’s still a tiny portfolio... but it’s no longer buried.

I wouldn’t normally share my earnings but what the heck, it’s only $100 so I will. Here they are:

Month............... Earnings ....... Uploads

Apr ....................... 1.78 ............... 20

May ...................... 5.92 ............... 18

Jun ....................... 9.44 ............... 10

Jul ....................... 26.41 ................ 8

Aug ..................... 31.52 ................ 4

Sep (half of it) ..... 26.29 ................ 2

Notice the reverse correlation between earnings and uploads? It wasn’t until June that I clicked and realised that it’s not the size of my portfolio that will make me money, but more the quality and placement of each image that makes the biggest difference. I constantly see contributors giving new people advice, telling them to upload as many files as possible but I advise the opposite. Take your time with this, don’t rush it, especially in the beginning. If you want your images found easily in search results, upload your best images first and slowing introduce the rest when you have some downloads and your stats are looking decent. Make sure all your images are really good but for every 10 images, try and have one that has the potential to eventually sell like hot cakes. It's these few great, original images that will carry the rest of your portfolio.

So if you’re new to this game and you’re watching your first sales trickling in every now and then, don’t get discouraged and give up. Instead think of microstock as a puzzle that you need to work out. Once you work out the formula you will be on the road to success.

It’s probably not in my best interested to share what I’ve learned, but I can’t help myself. I find it just as satisfying helping others as I do helping myself. In the words of Chris McCandless who wrote in his final diary entry that was quoted in one of my favourite books and movies,“happiness is only real when shared”.

Good luck everyone :)

Watch out for the next pay out, it will come much more quickly! That's what I was told when I reached my first $100 and the second check came indeed much faster. :-)
