Learning What Sells

I'm still new here, and being a full time student unfortunately does not leave me that much time to shoot stock photography. One thing that has helped me is figuring out what buyers want. There are many good ways to do this, mainly by looking at the top sellers for the month, but what helps me is to try and think like a designer.

Now, the tricky part is that all designers don't think or work alike so that makes it difficult, some like premade backgrounds that they can add text to, others like to take objects from multiple images and combine them together, the possibilities are endless. One person I knew that used stock imagery pretty much always would buy already complete designs, then add text elements into them.

So do I know what sells? No, not really, but like everything else you can do in life, you just have to learn.

Like Cmarshall717 said you never know what it might sell. I have on other site for sell a wood fence it sells like crazy. I was driving back home from an estimate and I saw this fence in front of a dumpster.I drove like 2 miles and I decided to go back and take a picture of it. It is amazing me how many people are interested in buying it. My opinion is if something is catching your eye while you're doing something else that is something worthed to give a try.

I agree, too. You never really know. I thought I had some pretty decent images. But, for some reason, one of my biggest DLs is of a silly chandelier hanging in the ceiling. Every time that one DLs, I have to laugh! Go figure!

I agree 100%. Sometimes an image that you think is really great will be rejected as not suitable for stock photography and other times something sells that you really kind of took a chance on uploading and knew it wasn't one of your best. Very hard to figure out. All I can say is, keep uploading! Like the old saying, throw everything against the wall, and see what sticks.
