Lessons in Model studio shots Part 1: Introducing DNF-Style

Okay, Let's try this blogging thing.

Thoughts: First we need a subject. What easier then to write about what we do here.

What do we do here?

We try to earn some of our investments in photography back by offering our photo's for sale.

Thinking: Maybe tell you who we are.

Who are we?

We are Danielle and Frenk (DNF Danielle N Frenk got it?).

We are a couple in life. Frenk met Danielle where Danielle was a model and Frenk a wannabee photographer trying to learn the business. Danielle needed a place to stay since she had an assignment near Belgium in a place far away from where she lived. I was in the happy circumstance that I lived very near to that particular place.

Well to cut a long story very short: We fell in love.

Next to modeling Danielle was also a photographer. A better one then me, I might add, and with other ideas about it.

We decided to not only live but also work together as a photographic team. The only real common thing besides photography we had in common is that we are both model photographers, so why not work as a team?

Now it is more then 2 years after that decision and we still feel comfortable working together.

Thinking: Okay what's next? Maybe tell about where we work?

Where we work

Since we do not earn enough (barely enough to buy some equipment once in a few summers) we are not in the lucky circumstance to have a big studio. But who cares, we have a house and we have our studio equipment so let's built a home studio.

Too small, too low but oh so cozy and oh so nice being at home the minute you stop working ;-) Our house is situated in a very forestlike environment and is a nice small wooden house in a pyramid shape which we share with our two cats.

Thinking: Since I am already talking about our studio maybe I can describe how it looks like and what equipment we use in it.

What's our studio like?

Our studio consist of three paper back/undergrounds coloured white, grey and black. We use generator powered Beam flashes controllable between 300 and 1200 Ws and softboxes of Chimeara. Further more a cheaper model stand alone flashes of 150 Ws and even smaller ones of 100 Ws.

Later I will tell you more about these.

We use two cams (one only when shooting simultaneously which we only do on location assignments like weddings, parties and concerts.

We use the Full frame Canon 5D. An very pretty cam with excellent results. As lenses we only use the best L lenses of Canon.

In our studio mainly a 50 mm 1.8 , a 28-70 2.8 and a 70-200 2.8

Later I will let you know what we use in which situations.

Thinking: Good I told them who we are, how we live and what we do, what equipment we use. I even told them we have two cats. Is there much more to share.

What else is there to share

Much much more. We could share with you how en why we make the photo's the way we do. We might even raise questions to answer. We might even share some secrets of model/people photography. We might tell about how to steer your model to get the most out of her. We might even tell you about things that happened in our lives to make some heavier topics more digestible.

YES we might and we very probably will

In the next parts of this blog.

First see how this falls and then most likely follow up with a part 2.

Please accept our apologies about bad English and maybe spelling errors and typos. Please feel free to add comments, tell us what you think of our (my) writing skills. Ask any questions, call us names ;-) but DO talk to us. We live and love to hear from you.
