The Practical Keyworder – Visual tools for Visual people
What is the difference between cataloging your images and just randomly tagging them with keywords? The answer can be found in the definition of cataloging itself –
Cataloguing uses langauage (words) to describe objects or works of art (images) in a way that gives a full sense of each object’s significance in relation to other objects in the collection, in other collections and in relationship to the world at large….
The key idea here is relationship. In many of my earlier posts I explained that the keywords themselves have relationships to each other – i.e. broad concepts are linked to narrower ones, and that the narrower and more specific the concepts become the more effective they are ( Concepts - one thing leads to another). In a closed system like a museum or an art gallery, professionals who catalog art and images and are trained in these principals. Here at dreamstime however the contributors themselves need to understand how cataloging and keywording work in order to have their own images be found (of course), but also because whenever an accepted image is keyworded on this site, it becomes part of the data that drives the dreamstime search engine and it has an effect on the search results for all images (really).
I’ve explained how these relationships work in earlier posts – but because we are all visual artists – I thought that a visual explaination would help. I found this neat tool – a visual dictionary/thesaurus:
Type in a word – and you get not only the definition – but a visual representation of the relationships between your word and other words. You can get a sense of how your keyword fits into the universe of words and concepts. This is not only a good practical tool for everyone (especially those people who are trying to perfect their language skills) – it is also an imagination stretcher! Try it, and as always –
