Quotes for Earth Day - Friday

Grand Canyon, View of Indian Garden Recently Renamed Havasupai Gardens

Yes, it's Earth Day! For me celebrating Earth Day is a double-edged sword. It saddens me to think of how much beauty we have destroyed on our precious planet. But I rejoice whenever I experience the immense scale of nature, its creativity and the magnificent isolation of untouched land. The Grand Canyon is one of those places that take your breath away - there are no words in my vernacular to describe it. No photo will ever completely capture the pure intensity that is the Grand Canyon. Happy Earth Day!

Quotes:

"The wonders of the Grand Canyon cannot be adequately represented in symbols of speech, nor by speech itself. The resources of the graphic art are taxed beyond their powers in attempting to portray its features. Language and illustration combines must fail." ~ John Wesley Powell

"The glories and the beauties of form, color, and sound unite in the Grand Canyon - forms unrivaled even by the mountains, colors that vie with sunsets, and sounds that span the diapson from tempest to tinkling raindrop, from cataract to bubbling fountain." ~ John Wesley Powell

"The elements that unite to make the Grand Canyon the most sublime spectacle in nature are multifarious and exceedingly diverse." ~ John Wesley Powell

"There can be nothing in the world more beautiful than the Yosemite, the groves of the giant sequoias and redwoods, the Canyon of the Colorado, the Canyon of the Yellowstone, the Three Tetons; and our people should see to it that they are preserved for their children and their children's children forever, with their majestic beauty all unmarred." ~ Theodore Roosevelt

"In the Grand Canyon, Arizona has a natural wonder which is in kind absolutely unparalleled throughout the rest of the world. I want to ask you to keep this great wonder of nature as it now is. I hope you will not have a building of any kind, not a summer cottage, a hotel or anything else, to mar the wonderful grandeur, the sublimity, the great loneliness and beauty of the canyon. Leave it as it is. You cannot improve on it. The ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it." ~ Theodore Roosevelt
