PACA Annual Meeting

It's late Friday night in Alexandria, Virginia and from my nicely upgraded room on the 24th floor I can see the Capital and the Washington Monument. But I'm not here to sightsee. Tonight was the opening reception of the PACA (Picture Agency Council of America) annual meeting.I first joined PACA when we could all meet at a small table in a Chinese restaurant in New York City. Since then PACA's membership has grown to embrace all members of the stock photography world. Dreamstime became one of the... continue reading

What is She Wearing?

Wardrobe is key to a professional looking image. And the type of clothing that a model is wearing can enhance the salability of an image in more ways than one. Here is a terrific image of a teen writing on the board in her classroom. The model's top gives a clue to the season: it is clothing that would only be worn in very warm weather. And since school is usually associated with the cooler seasons in most parts of the Northern hemisphere at least, the image usage could be limited if... continue reading

Accent lighting in outdoor photography

In one of my past blogs I mentioned that I was experimenting with an off camera flash in nature detail images. I used a radio remote trigger to fire the flash from different angles off camera axis. The results have been interesting and I find myself shooting a lot of detail images on my hiking trips to improve on the technique. To achieve the results I have been looking for, I set my tripod mounted camera on automatic (not program) and mount a radio slave trigger to the hot shoe mount. I... continue reading

An illustrated virtual guide to Gargano in Apulia (south of Italy)

My microstock photography is often about travel in my beautiful country, so why do not start a blog about the marvellous destinations that my country has to offer? I start with something I really know, something I really love and something I really shooted thousands of times in my life: even if I live in a different italian region (Emilia Romagna in the cold north) the place I call "my second home" is the charming italian Gargano area, part of the biggest south italy region:... continue reading

Prepare your shot or just drive and enjoy the view

On my way from Split to Šibenik I spotted a breath-taking landscape. Colors and shapes in nature's most vivid form of Mediterranean. One could stop every two seconds and take pictures. However, there are some moment that are hard to explain, but prioritize in our attention as the significant ones and even though we don't quite know the reason, we are ready to stop and admire. This photo is one of such moments. The whole Adriatic coast is divine, and as you drive along the sea roads there... continue reading

One Way Indie Authors Compete With Major Publishers.

Media editors often penalize writers who use illustrations or photos in fiction, except, of course, in children’s books. In novels, they consider graphics support “unprofessional.”In the case of indie writers, I believe they are wrong. Here’s why.I was an editor at the Reader’s Digest for many years. We loved pictures with our stories, which were either original or condensed from established magazines. But the editors upstairs, in the condensed book department, shunned them.... continue reading
