Religious Freedom

Religion has been much in the news over the last couple of weeks. Some of the flurry surrounds Christopher Hitchen’s best seller: God is Not Great and the tenth anniversary of the death of Mother Theresa. Organized religions down to the local level publish in print and/or online. What images are the most successful for these wide and varied uses in news and religious publications?A quick review across the magazines and websites of many faiths shows that the most popular stock image subjects... continue reading

Superstar of the Woods

I believe we can all agree that the Fly Agaric (Amanita Muscaria) is, by far, the most recognizable mushroom in the world. It is the Poster-boy for trouble, the Icon for poisonous mushrooms. However, not many people know that it's widely consumed throughout the northern hemisphere, especially in northern Europe and Asia. A simple 30 minute parboiling turns this unmistakable red warning sign into a delicious food.So why is it that a perfectly edible mushroom is the cover face for the bad... continue reading

Cannibalism

Did you know most pets are cannibals? They are. I learned that while working at the pet shop. For some reason animals do not think eating others of their own species to be a crime. When I hear someone say about how bad humans are I always remind of a cute pets at the shop. We, humans, are not so bad as we think, really :) At least we try to become better. continue reading

Surviving the Insanity

Abuse is a word that is taken so lightly and yet, the weight of its many forms on our society, and the world as a whole, is so enormous that we hardly know how to eradicate or treat it.With good intentions we preach against abuse in our churches, warn our children to watch out for it, form support groups to cope with the aftermath of it, and create laws to punish the perpetrators of it.Yet, violence within the home is grossly and negligently tolerated and rarely seen as the soul slaughtering... continue reading

Shamrock & Trinity

The shamrock, not to be confused with the 4-leaf clover, is an important symbol in the Irish culture.Legend has it that Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, has used the shamrock in the fields of Ireland to explain Trinity and convert pagans to Christianity. Three leaves, but still one plant.Though not theologically flawless, this analogy still lives on & is used to teach children about the Trinity.Happy St. Patrick's Dayeveryone :) continue reading
