Cuba: an architecturally diverse island in the Caribbean

A visit to Cuba is on everybody's travel bucket list. The best months to tour Cuba are usually December to May during the dry season when you can walk around freely admiring the beautiful buildings in Old Havana or taking a ride in a horse and buggy to enjoy the grandeur of a past time: weathered buildings, classic cars and a reminder of a rich history.  A visit to Cuba is architecturally enriching and photo-worthy with international influences such as art nouveau, art deco and eclectic... continue reading

Getting there with the lighting

So, these guys are my local models who are more often than not hanging out under the jetty at buddy dive. Around 1630hrs on calm sunny days, and it is rainy season at the moment so sun and calm water are a little rare, the light is perfect for shooting them with a little fill in flash against a backdrop of sunbeams and the jetty through the water's surface, which I find quite pleasing. I'm not done with them yet, but quite happy with this shot.   continue reading

So, this is why I'm here

I'm on Bonaire until the 31st of January working as an intern (at my age!) with the Bonaire Coral Restoration Foundation trying to put a dent in the decline of endangered Caribbean Elkhorn and Staghorn Acropora corals. So far so good, everything I've seen is encouraging a high degree of naive optimism. Sadly, the longterm picture for coral everywhere, and pretty much everything else in the sea that needs to build a skeleton from calcium and carbonate, is very bleak if we can't get are act together... continue reading

Bonaire dreams

I’m in Bonaire for the next two months, so plenty of opportunities to grab some great shots of “Divers Paradise” above and below the water. The excellent visibility and virtual absence of significant current at most of the dive sites on the island should give me the ample opportunity to play about with different stylistic and technical approaches to photographing this beautiful Caribbean island. Hope you enjoy it as much as me.   continue reading

First time Blogging so I'll talk about what I know

This is the first time I ever write a Blog and following the classic advice of Mark Twain - "Write what you know" - I've decided that for my first Blog I will write about the Island that is my home, Puerto Rico.  I’m always fascinated by how little some people know about this island; to the point that many don’t even know that it is U.S. territory but still, no one can deny its natural beauty and variety. The locals are friendly and through the island are attractions for every kind... continue reading

Colorful Puerto Rico

When I think of Puerto Rico, images come in so many different colors:The rich blue of Caribbean Sea is framed by palm leaves to form a picture-perfect tropical paradise:The solid earth-tone fortresses on the seaside are strong reminders of those troubled times in history, when the ocean front was not prime real estate but a source of incoming attack. In Old San Juan, the capitol stands out in cool grayish marble, beautiful... continue reading
