Writing recently about a decrease in vacation time among the world’s travelers for ’09, I have been keeping my eyes out for what the trend watchers think we will be doing in our downtime and what visual opportunities this will offer. I was surprised to learn that reading a book is gaining in popularity even as some publishers are in trouble. One publisher has launched a vid on YouTube for the Christmas season with celebrities stating why a book is a good gift. One says, “A book is a great gift... continue reading

Commuter patterns have changed dramatically over the past few months as individuals cut back on driving both to save gas money and to protect the environment just as other countries such as India and China begin a love affair with the automobile. Both of these eventshave created photographic opportunities.Bike commuting is down in some countries in Asia while up many percentage points in western countries.Dreamstime needs images of bicycle riders that are obviously on their way to the office... continue reading
Occasionally I have the opportunity to query buyers of images about their specific needs. This week I spoke to the head of an art buying team that spends over seven figures on image licenses annually. Naturally I asked about the kinds of images they use in the subject area that I was planning on writing about this week-military life. Our client mentioned that his department seeks images of the military that show courage and honor and images that indicate pride in service and country. This particular... continue reading
As a photographer you need to be the most focused of all spectators at sporting events not only to make the best images but to keep from getting into the action yourself. To see what happens when a photographer forgets where he is, go to this video before reading on.There are more examples of sports shots gone wrong at the end of this post. For now though, concentrate on getting the money shot without causing problems for yourself (lawsuits?) and others.TEAM SPORTS1. Note of caution: if a... continue reading
Fresh out of ideas? Your creative meter stuck on zero? Got the late winter idea blahs?I recommend reading this. It’s rather long but hey, if you are stuck in a morass of boredom with your creative brain flat lining, what else do you have to do? Or you can go to YouTube for a shorter video reprise. Be warned though the video first comes off as a “just say no to all mind altering substances” but persist and you’ll get about 25 % of the jest of the full reading of the PDF text version.... continue reading
The most popular concepts in the top photographs from last year are happiness/love/family and determined business teams. Don’t drop everything to focus on kisses and bunches of business types. Statistics only tell part of any story. How many images would have been in the top seller list if the photographer hadn’t uploaded a dozen nearly similar ones, thus spreading the downloads over the entire dozen? On the other hand if an image is a great stock photo, even a cropped or almost identical image... continue reading
There are some composition tricks that apply to stock photography specifically. As more and more image use migrates to the web, the old stock photo rule of leaving room for type is becoming less significant. It is becoming replaced with approaches that enhance an image’s visibility at the thumbnail size and on web pages. Images with a square format gain maximum space in returned search results. The space allocated for each individual thumbnail is always large enough to allow for maximum width and... continue reading
A pioneer in the stock business once said,"A good stock photo is an incomplete photo".That doesn't make sense, does it? Shouldn't a great stock photo simply be a great photo? Sometimes, yes. But think about one of the reasons stock photos sell and the unfinished business of some stock photos make sense.Look at these images:Image on the left seems to be waiting for something to happen. Wouldn't it be a better photo of... continue reading
This is a question my parents ask me all the time, right before they insert the annoying phrase, “maybe you should get a real job”. You see, they’re old fashioned and grew up in a time when careers were the norm, together with a stable pension. The world has changed considerably and the pace of change is accelerating.Nowadays, it’s not only much easier to become your own boss but it’s expected! Stock photography is just a small part of the much larger ‘gig economy’, where traditional... continue reading
During an illustration editor's review some mistakes are noticeably common, so here's a list of those ones which might help illustration contributors in their submissions. Copyright - When creating any drawing, the contributor must keep in mind not to include any logo or any brand in their illustration. There are already tons of illustrations out there so there are chances that your work might also look alike ones that are already online.Jaggies - Jagged lines or edges, usually this... continue reading
