Is Photography Art?

"You don’t take a photograph, you make it.”- Ansel Adams~ ~ ~Always an interesting (indeed, a provocative) question. Whenever it’s asked - and it’s never asked of paint-slingers - there’s contention. Pushback. Though, lately I’ve been pondering the “rules" - or lack thereof - for creative fire. There’s a bumper-sticker, Art Saves Lives, countered by Van Gogh’s ear, so pigeonholes are for pigeons, and since I'd no idea I would mention... continue reading

Making artisanal candles

I've been about making candles before and this is my "third chapter" on learning the art of making artisanal candles.I will not repeat the issues pointed out in the first article, so, if you have not read it yet, I suggest you do it now: Homemade candles (english at the bottom)The second article on this theme is about a completely different technique. Although not connected, here's the link to check it out: Bees' Wax CandlesThe first time I made candles I noticed that, after the wax was... continue reading

Romanian traditions - part 2

At the end of the last month (on 27th October 2012) I was asked to drive someone at a fair, 50 km away from my town. He told me the traditional craftsmen from Slatina will be there. For me, it is always a joy to meet this people. But, usually, at this fairs nothing especially happens. Every participant is trying to sell the products of their work, but often this is a hard endeavor. Not many are interested in traditional things. As a young boy, I loved to eat in clay bowls and plates. Nowadays,... continue reading

Romanian traditions

One of my favorite photographic themes is Romanian traditions. And when I say this, I mean traditional clothing, traditional crafts, traditional houses and the way the romanian peasants lived their life. One of the most remarkable facts is the romanian peasant was always very inventive. Unfortunately, this was a need that came from the poverty. Unable to buy anything, in many cases bound to the land they worked, the romanian peasant was forced to find ways to improve the quality of life or at... continue reading

Techie bag

When I decided to focus more on photography about a year ago, the last thing on my mind was becoming a camera equipment nerd. You know the ones with their camera bags .. huge amount of lenses, filters and tripods. Only second to golfers in the equipment departure..."Oooooo missed that shot .... Its because I didnt get that Goldplus Challenger 9000 club in Titanium."Well, one year later I have a huge camera bag: body upgrade, 3 tripods, 4 extra lenses and several filters. And my wishlist of... continue reading

When do you call yourself a professional?

I have been shooting photographs for over twenty years. For most of that time I was a film photographer developing my own photos using a darkroom. The cost to produce images worth selling is astronomical and creating a high quality image worth selling is extremely time consuming. Therefore, I never was able to sell images. With the advent of the digital age came cameras that can produce high quality images in a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the cost. Now I can sell my images digitally... continue reading
