Before I start, I'd like to tell you that my camera is the best; shoots at 14 frames per second, focuses instantly, weather sealed, has 4K video up to 120 fps and you tell it what to shoot, it goes by itself and brings back great results :))So yes, i'm being sarcastic, but with a message. Its not that the above specs are useless, in fact they are great at assisting professionals to attain their desired moments within a frame or video. Pro level specs do give a sense of trust due... continue reading

The part 1 of this blog tried to answer the question why shoot film in 2018. This part will tell you how to develop that film that you have shot on your camera. Because the color process brings some additional complications, I’m just going to describe developing black and white film here. There are more nuances to the process than what is written here, but I’m going over the basic process. I leave out some optional steps such as pre-wetting and a separate stop bath. After getting familiar with... continue reading
There is now a generation of photographers, who have never used an analogue film camera in their life. Even some of us older ones have used digital cameras longer than we have used film. Due to the rapid procession of digital camera technology surely the analogue film format is now totally obsolete? Well, it’s true that professional photographers these days prefer the digital format because it’s faster, easier to work with and after the initial investment, cheaper. But as an art form, film photography... continue reading
So you want to be a cinematographer. Why not? After all you have a DSLR, or cell phone, or GoPro capable of recording footage. How hard can it be to use that technology to capture video? You need spend no more than 10 or 15 minutes reviewing shaky, out of focus and uninspiring clips on Facebook and YouTube to realize that taking good video footage is about more than just having the prerequisite technology.Similar to stock photography, creating good stock footage is about quality and concept. Someone recently asked me what's the most direct, organic, personal thing that I can put into words in two seconds, knowing my weak spot for film photography. In about one, my mind stalled so I could deliver the answer to a question I've been actually asking myself for so long that I forgot the A's and Z's of it.INSTANT!Yes, INSTANT, that tiny thing, both a photo and object, usually known as Polaroid.I can't think of anything more personal than this. (There are... continue reading
I love the smell of coffee in the morning, the smell of freshly baked bread, the smell of citrus, the smell of the ocean. Same as most of us, I guess.I also love the smell of fixer and whenever I get that pungent vinegarish pinch in my nose, I feel like I'm time-travelling back to my early days as a photographer, some twenty years ago, straight into the magic red room, the mysterious darkroom, a special place full of wonderful memories. The feeling I get when I develop a... continue reading
Film sets are a health and safety inspector’s nightmare. They are often built as quickly as possible, with potentially dangerous stunts going on and lots of things happening in the area constantly, leading to unpredictable situations. However, the examples we have chosen took this specialized insanity to the next level, though to be fair to some of them the problems were not always of their own making. From flash floods destroying sets to locals attacking the crew with bows and arrows, we have created... continue reading
I am a great fan of transparency films even today. I was shooting images in transparency film even after I acquired a dslr camera. The images are so vibrant and brilliant. Then came a time these film were scarce and the processing houses were shut down one by one.Though I used to do E6 processing at home, I was not able to get the chemicals for that.Even the drum scan centers also diverted their business to something else.I was stuck with a good collection of transparencies shot from early... continue reading
I got my first film lens to digital camera adapter in 2012, when I received a Minolta lens as a gift. I work with a Canon 7D. My daughter, a wedding photographer, told me about using an adapter. They aren’t expensive, so I gave it a try. The adaptor fits between your camera and the film lens.Cottonwood leavesI’m glad I decided to take the risk and invest in an adapter - which sell for $30-$50 on Amazon.com.Fotodiox adapterSince that time, I picked up a Canon A1 at a garage sale,... continue reading
