Visualise disk space used (free utility)

Thought it was appropriate that I share a useful windows utility that I use regularly to show where space has gone on my laptop harddisk or an external disk. It is a free utility that you don't have to install so there is no penalty in trying it. You end up finding all sorts of application left-overs, old backups, etc that you can bin and save space. I just keep a short-cut to it on my desktop and use it once in a while to see where my space has gone. My last effort identified a whole lot of HDR working... continue reading

Lens not wide enough - why not create a panorama (free tool)

My first experience with stitching photos into panoramas/mosaics was using the Canon PhotoStitch application. It has come along way since I first used it in 1999 however, still seems to struggle with many stitching scenarios, especially if the photos are not captured panning about a perfect axis. Use your GPS to tell your photo where it is and more ... (free tools)

If you have a GPS why not log your location in a track file. Then when you get back to your computer, you can pull the coordinate into your image from your track and the location description (metadata) from those coordinates. Once you have a coordinate in the "GPS Latitude" and "GPS Longitude" EXIF metadata fields you can make use of the free “Microsoft Pro Photo Tools” (PPT) which will use the coordinate to extract Location, City, State/Region and Country. These fields are populated through a... continue reading

Valuable exercise- have a go (free meta data viewer and editor tool)

Ever wanted to know more about what your CAMERA did to your photo? You know what YOU did but there was more? There is the basic metadata (EXIF-Exchangeable image file format, IPTC-International Press Telecommunications Council) exposed through tools like Lightroom but there is more that can be accessed. There is a free tool written by Phil Harvey that extracts a lot more detail than you would otherwise see.
