A rose is a rose is a rose

Summer is here and flowers are bursting into bloom. There they are right outside the door and so pretty. But just because they are so marvelous doesn't mean that you need to photograph them. It seems that every flower that has ever bloomed has had its picture taken. When the supply out numbers the demand...well you know what that means in the eyes of reviewers. Before you even think about taking another photo of a flower, ask yourself if the world really needs it. But if you must, how can you make... continue reading

Mommy LOOK!

Everybody loves a baby...unless they are screaming in the seat next to you on a cross-country flight. And almost everyone has a baby around the house at one time or another. But beware...babies and children can be like little flowers: way too many images of them to compete with unless the image is exceptional. There is much more to getting great shots of kids than cute smiles. For starters: if you are taking photos of your own children, try to review the resulting images with a non-biased eye. You... continue reading

Booming

The older folks are most definitely not hanging around the rocking chairs these days. Life expectancy has been extended greatly over the last 30 years. Those that are living longer are enjoying it more. This is a generation that started going to the gym in their 20's and have been on diets for forty years. They know about their hearts and blood pressure and what to do to stay healthy. These are the boomers. People born after the late 1940's.The knees are a little weak... continue reading

Yummo! Shooting Food

Hundreds, if not thousands of cookbooks, are published every year.Entire magazines and web sites are devoted to recipes and cooking tips. Many charities and non-profit organizations self-publish cookbooks as fundraisers. Fore!

Golf is no longer a game just for the plaid pants, country club set. Both ends of the financial spectrum have taken up the sport in big numbers. Not just bank presidents are rolling around the course; the fastest growing segment of the golf business is in the Arab Emirates and one of the current golf success stories in pro golf proudly calls himself a "redneck". Golf remains a big business all over the world with many secondary support products and services needing images.... continue reading

PACA Annual Meeting

It's late Friday night in Alexandria, Virginia and from my nicely upgraded room on the 24th floor I can see the Capital and the Washington Monument. But I'm not here to sightsee. Tonight was the opening reception of the PACA (Picture Agency Council of America) annual meeting.I first joined PACA when we could all meet at a small table in a Chinese restaurant in New York City. Since then PACA's membership has grown to embrace all members of the stock photography world. Dreamstime became one of the... continue reading

Moving Pictures

An industry that involves big trucks, banks and emotional trauma needs images to illustrate its goods and services. Americans change locations on average every five years.Standard business leases are often for five years or less. I am about to cart everything I own, two cats and 2,000 books from one side of the US to the other. Moving is on my mind.Images that symbolize starting a new life in a new home are used to illustrate concepts... continue reading

A Simple Life

A growing awareness of environmental issues has created a parallel change in personal values for many people. Instead of the conspicuous consumption of years past and the over indulgent styles of the 90's, more and more seek a quieter lifestyle.Instead of leaving a big footprint on the earth and its resources, young and old are seeking simplicity, privacy and inner peace. These trends are reflected in images used in today's advertising and media... continue reading
