Improving Photography Skills Through Dreamstime

This is my first foray into writing a blog for Dreamstime....I've been a contributor to Dreamstime for some time, starting back when there were less than 1 million images online (seems like ages ago!).At the time, I had discovered the Dreamstime site while looking for inexpensive, quality stock images, thenlater decided to try my hand at contributing a few myself.   At first, I submitted a few vacation photographs, captured with a little "point and shoot" camera (which... continue reading

Go back to start

Dear Dreamstime contributors and designers,It's been a while since I wrote a blog.Everything in my life crumbled apart piece by piece during 2015:April 2015 I dislocated and broke both of my shoulder simultaneous during powerlifting (one of my passions). This meant I had to stop training for two months, and it will take about a year or two before I am back on track strength wise.In in october my team manager at work stepped aside, and did everything for me to succeed her. A few years back... continue reading

Microstock Photography – The Winning Strategies, part I

Above is a catchy title that most stock photography veterans would raise an eyebrow at. Is there really a winning strategy? Not really. Or maybe there is. It depends largely on your expectations and definition of “winning”. This article has been compiled keeping the new players in mind and “winning” refers to a significant growth in popularity and sales. As can be easily predicted these days, the major part of the strategy is off-camera and online. While your potential clients and opportunities... continue reading

Look down to move up

A pal runs a yacht hire company that has done nothing but thrive. He has a sun tan all year round and lives on a diet of ice cream cones. It feels like he was born in a bed of roses and I wish him well.Everyone knows someone like that even if it is from reading about someone luck struck in the Sunday newspapers.I asked him about resources and he said that wealth is all about what you know.I don't think he meant education in an academic sense but the assets we are surrounded by.He... continue reading

Finally an upward trend

After many months of decreasing sales and revenue I am finally on an upward trend. This month marks a new BME for revenue for a month and a new sales and revenue BME for a quarter. What is the secret? Putting in the work.Create, upload, rinse, and repeat. As my number of images online have gone up my stats have gone up as well. The best thing that I have found to keep my spirits up and the sales rolling in is to set goals for myself. For example my goal last year was to reach 700 images... continue reading

1,001!

In the summer of 2010, I never imagined I'd have a portfolio of over 1,000 illustrations on Dreamstime. It's been an amazing journey as a part-time illustrator. My advice to anyone starting out at Dreamstime is to find your own style and be unashamed to create what you want. My other advice is to tell a story whenever possible. My full-time job is photo retoucher and owner for Photo Grafix. One of my clients is a big Dreamstime contributor known as Creatista.Working on over 5,000 images of... continue reading

500th upload

Like an infant it me a little over 16 moths to walk amongst other photographers, I often state that I am not a pro and I do not consider myself to be at a professional level in my photography, I am still learning and I am happy to see my progression as I gain experience. So a simple message to the newcomers, don't worry try and try again in time you will learn and you too will be able to walk amongst the pro and sell your work. The 500thimage kind of represent what my last 16 months of stock... continue reading

200 online

After a couple of years of being on DT I finally have 200 online, some of it has been good, some frustrating but it has given me an outlet for me to use some of the 40k+ shots I have taken in the last year (only about 1k of them have been processed and the rest are sitting on externals waiting for the day I get to them. Here is the one that took me to 200 (its an editorial so its not as creative as I would of liked)Here is my first saleI have learned alot on this site and made a bit... continue reading

Time to level 5

As time marches forward I find it interesting to see which of my images will become my top sellers. Some you kind of know right away, while others come out of nowhere...I did a little bit of number crunching to see if it is clear cut right from the start, and if they all seem to grow at the same speed.Naturally, it is not clear cut at all and hard to find trends. The only one that holds across all my best sellers is that I get the first sale in the first month of being online.Aside from... continue reading
