Photographing grey seals in the Farne Islands

One of my favourite places to dive is less than two hours drive from my home city of Edinburgh. The Farnes, a group of islands off the coast of Northumberland, offer the very special attraction of diving up-close-and-personal with wild grey seals (Halichoerus grypus). This species of seal is relatively common around the British coast, but they tend to keep their distance underwater and are rarely seen by divers. Not so in the Farne Islands, where the local population of grey seals have become... continue reading

King Penguins of the Falkland Islands

Of the five species of penguin to be found on the Falkland Islands, my favourite is the beautiful King Penguin.   The main colony is at Volunteer Point on East Falkland, about 2-3 hours drive from the capital, Stanley. The colony is in good health and numbers are increasing. I understand there are now around 1,000 pairs and chicks.   King Penguins have an 18 month breeding cycle, which means they are present all year around. The chicks stay on land during the cold subantarctic... continue reading

The beautiful small islands of Greece

Having just returned from a wonderful two week holiday on the small Greek island of Paxos (images coming soon) I thought I would share some images from the various islands I have visited and photographed over the last few years. What is it that draws me to these islands?Certainly the hot and sunny Mediterranean weather appeals to me -such a contrast to the often cold and wet climate we have here in the UK.
