Slow Food

Best sellers among food images are those of fast food dishes, especially hamburgers and fries that are used on menu boards and in the many articles about the joys AND dangers of fast food. But now there is a movement in the opposite direction called slow food.In 1989 in response to the opening of a McDonald’s at the Spanish Steps in Rome an Italian started the slow food movement. In everyway this trend is the opposite of its cousin at the drive-through.It has grown up in response to both environmental... continue reading

Spectator Sports

As a photographer you need to be the most focused of all spectators at sporting events not only to make the best images but to keep from getting into the action yourself. To see what happens when a photographer forgets where he is, go to this video before reading on.There are more examples of sports shots gone wrong at the end of this post. For now though, concentrate on getting the money shot without causing problems for yourself (lawsuits?) and others.TEAM SPORTS1. Note of caution:... continue reading

The Eyes Have It

Facial expressions and body language can either make or break a photo. Again and again we see images that would be successful if only there was emotion in the image instead of a subject with a bored look or a blank stare. How can you get your models more engaged with your camera to get more positive results?First of all stop falling in love with the dark and depressing look. Sure it’s dramatic and has it place but think about how images are used. With the exception of pitiful children and animals... continue reading

Very Crafty

The mention of a craft project no longer has to bring to mind clunky macrame window hangings or the dreaded and ugly scarf so lovingly knit by grandma. A change has come to the world of craft and with it, photo opportunities. As Rob Walker wrote in the NY Times last December, ‘…the new wave of crafters (have) infused uncool-sounding domestic skills like knitting and sewing with a postpunk attitude that revolve(s) partly around mall-rejecting self-sufficiency.’Along with the buy local food... continue reading

The New China

The world prepares to visit China in great numbers for the 2008 Olympics. Many visitors may be surprised at the extent of China’s expansion. According to Businessweek, “China will soon be home to the world's largest airport, the world's first fully sustainable city, and the world's highest outdoor observation deck, to name just a few of its innovative architectural feats”.Interest in this booming economic marvel will extend long after the Olympic torch is extinguished as will demand for... continue reading

Point of View

Fresh out of ideas? Your creative meter stuck on zero? Got the late winter idea blahs?I recommend reading this. It’s rather long but hey, if you are stuck in a morass of boredom with your creative brain flat lining, what else do you have to do? Or you can go to YouTube for a shorter video reprise. Be warned though the video first comes off as a “just say no to all mind altering substances” but persist and you’ll get about 25 % of the jest of the full reading of the PDF text version.... continue reading

Around the House

It’s nearly spring cleanup/fix up time.I’m limiting my spring action to probing the back of the refrigerator to dislodge jars of forgotten spaghetti sauce. But for those that will spend in excess of 150 million dollars on home improvements this year in the US, it’s time to get to work. The do-it-yourself crowd spends zillions of dollars and has created a multitude of businesses on-line and on the street to sell everything from fixtures to classes in building additions. Websites, magazines... continue reading

In the News!

I am very pleased with the images that are showing up daily under the new editorial license. It snows in Athens and BOOM, Dreamstime displays images of the Roman Forum covered in snow.Barack Obama appears at a rally and we see him quickly in the news section. (We have a terrific collection of the candidates for the US Presidential nomination now.) Paris Hilton steps out on the street and a Dreamstime contributor with the best vantage point photographs her while the paparazzi look on from behind... continue reading

What Makes Best Selling Photo?

The most popular concepts in the top photographs from last year are happiness/love/family and determined business teams. Don’t drop everything to focus on kisses and bunches of business types. Statistics only tell part of any story. How many images would have been in the top seller list if the photographer hadn’t uploaded a dozen nearly similar ones, thus spreading the downloads over the entire dozen? On the other hand if an image is a great stock photo, even a cropped or almost identical image... continue reading

Best Seller Tips-Illustration

I have just reviewed some of the most popular images as selected by our users during 2007. I’ll first discuss what I learned about illustrations and then next week the lessons from the most popular themes/images captured in photographs. Some of my findings surprised me and I hope they will inspire you to create fresh images. Fair warning though: an image may be popular for a variety of reasons that aren’t necessarily the subject, the composition or the keywords. These are the key points but by... continue reading
