Every couple years, the problems of the world and tension between global leaders and world powers seem to cease for a few short weeks while the world comes together for the Olympic Games. We sit around our televisions day and night and watch as young athletes compete on the world stage. We see the advertisements from the world’s biggest brands- the ones with the deepest pockets (you know who they are), capitalizing on the hype of the Games. Well, you don’t have to be one of these big... continue reading

Whistler is a Canadian resort town in western Canada, approximately 125 km north of Vancouver. Its pedestrian village has won numerous design awards in 1990’s. Before the tourist has arrived this land has been inhabited by the Squamish and Lil’wat First Nations. The first non-indigenous visitors to the Whistler Valley were California gold rush veterans that came here to explore better coastal access route to the booming B.C. gold mines. In the late 1920s and 1930 several... continue reading
With the Olympic Torch Relay underway for the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games there will be thousands of photo opportunities. If you are on the route, here's how to plan your best shot.1. Try to pick an early morning or late afternoon time when there will be a good contrast between the flame and the rest of the scene. In the photos here, I took the pictures of the 2010 Canadian Olympic Torch Relay just at dusk on the first day of the relay in Victoria, British Columbia.2. Try for a fast shutter... continue reading

After one of the worst summers in the UK for 20 years, getting stressed out at work in the office.I was glad to be able to get away on holiday for a couple of weeks to the Greek Island of Zante with my family. The weather was fantastic, clear blue skies (the odd white cloud to break up the monotomy) plenty of sea, sun, sand and stifado. It was great just to wander along the beach (with camera at the ready) watching the world go by. Catching the odd photo now and again. As my daughter is studying... continue reading
The Olympics are starting tomorrow in Vancouver (and Whistler Mountain), good luck to all the athletes and may everyone achieve personal bests - whatever their country or sport.Given the RF stock unfriendly nature of the logo filled event, I'm sure we'll be seeing many editorial photos from the events that will hopefully attract some buyers...I've had a collection going for some time now with 2010 Olympics and Canadian images that you can find here...Here are some of my favorites:... continue reading
After spending some time in Beijing and shooting several Olympic events I have to give some praise to China for how well they handled the masses. Specifically freelance photographers with no press credentials were treated quite well. The volunteer staff was very friendly and helpful. Despite all the security checks, I never felt like livestock being herded around like I so often do in western airports and high security events. There were very few restrictions on cameras and I was even able to get... continue reading
The Olympic Games are over and the journalists in Italy are starting to say how disappointed we are: at Athens we won 32 medals while this year in Beijing we have won “only” 28 medals... getting the 9th place.I’d like to use this space to say I don’t agree! I’m not disappointed at all.Italy is a strange country... If you come to Italy and turn on television or if you go to the Sports section of a newspaper during the year you will find only football. If you are looking for “other... continue reading
