Let’s raise our voices with respect

I'm tired of American Politics. You can't turn on the TV these days without politicians or their surrogates slinging mud at each other in very loud voices, and we still have 3 months until the election.       The level of discourse in this country seems to reach a new low each day.But this has also made me think about the way we treat each other on social media. It seems that the animosity of the internet has given rise to a new social "norm" for how we speak with each... continue reading

Trailer travels

I recently purchased a 'Breakthrough Technology'X3 ND 10-stop filter and tested it on Monday as we had stormy weather with, clouds, rain and strong winds.I used a wired remote with a 2 second delay and a sturdy tripod with stones in a bag hung from the hook on the center column. Using a small aperture and slow ISO I timed it at 60 seconds for the best exposure balance. The end result was excellent color rendition, no color shift, ghosting or streaking. The movement of the foliage,... continue reading

Footage - to...do or not to do?

My dearest friends! I felt a "victim" in a newly born stream of video at DT. Footage is fun... It's nice looking for some scenes to capture, but... I ask myself if there are chances it can be as popular as stills? Should I dedicate my time to it, taking it from photos?... Just because it's not my main occupation - rather a serious hobby. What do you think about footage - to do or not to do?... continue reading

Filtering: how much is too much?

Hey everybody, recently I uploaded this image which is one of my favourites of my recent shoot. It is the Capelo do Ferrel in Portugal (image ID 29327797). I added a slight filter on it to bring out the white of the walls and the clouds against the blue of the sky.I know I'm opening up a can of worms here and I am aware of the different opinions circulating on various photography forums, but I wonder how much filtering is too much. The reason I uploaded this image was because I see a lot... continue reading

Editing can be hard - getting a second opinion can help

From time to time I enter the various assignment contests here, usually adding anywhere from one to a handful of photos. Much of the time, they are rejected because the editors were looking for "something a little more elaborate." A couple have made it, but my track record is such that I only enter with some trepidation. Then came the smartphone assignment contest. I've been using my iPhone a lot and absolutely love having a camera with me all the time. I sometimes use it to take a few photos even... continue reading

Second opinion

Usually I accept rejections without a word and only learning from them for the next time. But one rejection I couldn't accept and send a message to the editors "photo was rejected for "Image is out of focus or too much of the subject is out of focus (DOF too shallow or DOF not justified) / Image is shaken. Use a faster speed or a tripod. Please check the files at 100% zoom before submitting them. "The image is not out of focus and the DOF is not shallow I did not used fast shutter to emphasize the... continue reading
