Offering Free Photos

Since I started becoming more serious about photography I have learned the advantage of sometimes dong what I do for free. It is the old philosophy that if you have a gift, do not be afraid to share it. The perfect example came this past week.I have done some free photography at my wife's school - shooting at Christmas Parties and the like. I had the agreement that I could shoot school areas an some of the staff, but no students. Well of course. And I had used the access to shoot a few things... continue reading

Frog in the bathroom ...

On a recent work trip I opted to leave the toliet for Sebastian, a Green Tree Frog who I named after it seemed he wasn't hopping away. He spent his time either right in the bowl itself or under the rim. I found moths around the outdoor lights which he gladly ate in exchange for some very natural and capable modeling. The arrangement meant that I was not able to use my toliet but was a small price to pay for some of the shots I was able to get.I had with me a flash head and cord as well as an... continue reading

Jumping into Stock Photography

This is my first foray into Stock Photography. I've been interested in photography for quite some time and I've always wanted to realize the full potential of a quality camera. A couple of years ago I bought the camera, but for some reason I found myself only taking shots with the full Auto setting on. I recently realized that this was like owning a Porsche for a five minute commute. I clearly wasn't getting the full potential of the camera.I started reading all I could and trying to digest all... continue reading

Accelerating income from microstock: experience and a few thoughts!

At Easter 2009 I was trying to get a picture of Inverness castle using a wide angle lens so a bunch of wild daffodils was in the foreground and the castle behind. The width of the River Ness stopped me from getting the shot I wanted. However at this moment another photographer turned up and we had a conversation in which he said he was not doing anything with his web site but was submitting to microstock agencies. When pressed he said he was making $480 per month. I thought to myself better give... continue reading

Be The Best "You"

Getting exposure as a photographer — and making sales — is all about standing out in the crowd. But, in Dreamstime especially, that crowd is VERY, very large. So how do you stand out? It's all about exploiting your unique skills and opportunities. For example, during a fishing trip in Nunavut, Canada, I took a very basic landscape photo of the Arctic Tundra. I have since sold this image on Dreamstime several times over, and will no doubt continue to see revenue from it into the future.... continue reading

Missed Opportunity

Boy Did we blow it, Yesterday at around 4:00pm there was a train derailment less than ½ mile from our house. My first instinct was to grab the cameras and run to snap a few photos (though my dear hubby was a little more cautious). But we were almost instantly told to evacuate. So we jumped in the motor home and headed to the state park for the night.Today theyevacuateda few people a little closer to the site but we were allowed to come home. But still can not get close enough for photos.... continue reading
