Getting there with the lighting

So, these guys are my local models who are more often than not hanging out under the jetty at buddy dive. Around 1630hrs on calm sunny days, and it is rainy season at the moment so sun and calm water are a little rare, the light is perfect for shooting them with a little fill in flash against a backdrop of sunbeams and the jetty through the water's surface, which I find quite pleasing. I'm not done with them yet, but quite happy with this shot.   continue reading

Hastings pier set to re-open

I have written before about our historic Victorian pier here in Hastings in East Sussex, England. Opened in 1872, the pier was closed some years ago due to safety concerns and later devasted by fire in October 2010.With funding from the Lottery Heritage Fund and money raised from the public, rebuilding work has been taking place over the last few years with the grand re-opening now hopefully taking place in April 2016.Much work has been carried out to strengthen the iron sub structure. Wooden... continue reading

Eastbourne pier -Another fire disaster

Back in October 2010 I posted here about the tragic fire that destroyed much of the historic Victorian pier here in Hastings.History has recently repeated itself with fire destroying a portion of the pier at Eastbourne -some 17 miles along the East Sussex coastline.Breaking out around 3.00pm on Wednesday July 30, the fire was initially reported as being a small in nature but soon developed into a major incident with fire crews from around East Sussex attending aided by the RNLI lifeboats... continue reading

Hastings pier - set to rise from the ashes

Back in October 2010 I posted about the devasting fire which had destroyed most of the Victorian pier here in Hastings.Great news this week when the charitable trust hoping to restore the pier was awarded £11.4 million towards the £13.9 million needed from the Heritage Lottery Fund. There is still some money to raise but, all being well, work should start in Spring 2013 with completion in late 2014.The original 1872 substructure remained intact after the fire and a newly designed upper structure... continue reading

Hastings pier destroyed (A landmark lost?)

October saw a sad event in Hastings when the Victorian pier was largely destroyed by fire in the early hours of the 5th. Opened in 1872 it was designed and built by Eugenius Birch who was also responsible for a number of other piers including the west Pier in Brighton (also destroyed by fire a few years back). It had been closed for several years due to safety concerns but, nethertheless, continued to be an elegant landmark on the coastline here.Since moving to Hastings last year I have taken... continue reading

What makes us happy?

Dear Friends,Is there anything that makes a New Yorker happier than spring? Those first cheery daffodils, the tulips and new grass, and when the trees burst into flower before leafing out. It's a glorious spectacle of health and vibrancy in our parks and other open spaces, and it's the most wonderful time of year to be in New York. And every year, more people want to visit and live in our city. Like many of you, I listened eagerly to Mayor Bloomberg's Earth Day speech as he described how New... continue reading

Short Walk on a Long Pier

In East Texas, we're blessed with an abundance of lakes. This year, we've had plenty of rain and the lakes are full and thriving with life. Recently, I stopped by Lake Cherokee for a few photos. Almost by accident I took this shot of the pier and reflections in the lake.Always room for improvement, but I thought it turned out pretty good. continue reading
