Stay Frosty

Images of refreshing beverages, both alcoholic and otherwise are used for purposes as diverse as major ads and invitations to small parties. The virtues of drinking eight glasses of water daily may have come under scrutiny recently but no one argues with the importance of water and other healthy liquids in a sane diet. Images of fit individuals taking in a daily allotment of fluids are used in promotions for dietary supplements, health clubs, juices and bottled water as well as for editorial pieces... continue reading

Hair and Makeup in Photos

While reviewing a featured photographer's portfolio, I saw a perfect opportunity to write about the judicious use of makeup on women models. Nothing better illustrates how makeup can lend authenticity to a model in different situations than photographer Niderlander’s four shots of the same model made up in different ways for four different situations/moods/time of dayIn the first image of a researcher or medical tech, the makeup is extremely subdued as is fitting in that situation. Most... continue reading

The Trendspotting Trend*

Traditional stock photo agencies are heavily vested in ‘creative research’. This is the stuff that informs expensive stock productions and drives editing guidelines. The biggest stock producers look for sociological and economic trends that will impact general image needs in the near future. The on-salary staff that seeks out trends are called creative researchers. Their job is seeking out ‘cool’. They hire outside trend researchers or troll the internet looking for the next big thing.... continue reading

Color management for dummies

Sorry for the title, I didn't mean to insult anyone, just wanted to get your attention. Now that I have it, let's talk about color profiles and color management.    Without going too deep into color theory or technical specifications, lets just me just say that color profiles are a tool meant to help content creators make sure their audience sees everything the same way they do. This blog will focus on digital cameras and digital images, but the same principles may apply to analog media... continue reading

Getting the most out of a photo shoot

Hi DT'ersI, like many others have recently been making a significant effort to improve my downloads. There doesn't seem to be an one size fits all answer, but effort in does equal reward out, as with most things in life that are worth doing.A friend and I often plan a morning on a weekend to go to a particular location and get some shots for stock and for pleasure (theres a difference it seems). We typically end up with 10-20 good shots that look great on a website generic nice photos, but... continue reading

Doomsday scene

I'm 3d modeler but sometimes to brake my routine I need to try to create creative art with other tools too.For this picture I was used a photo which was created before the thunderstorm. From tutorials I've learned so far,I saw you can create, different scene moods just by adjusting image with levels and rgb curves. So I played around with settings to see what will come out of it.When I've got dark doomsday scene I thought it would be nice to create a vortex with swirl tool so I did it.To add more action... continue reading

Do editorial photos sell? And at what ratio to commercial?

I have about 1200 photos on line at DT and practically all are for advertisement. But when I click on contributors portfolios, I see many editorial images. I just got back from a trip to France. Do any images of say, a prespective shot of the Arc de Triomphe with the Champs Elysees on both sides sell? What is the ratio of editorial to commercial sales on DT? Maybe I've been ignoring photos because I can't get 250 model releases or a property release to the Empire State building!Any thoughts or ideas?... continue reading
