I'd like to share some of the background of this photo.Dr. Henry Heimlich was 59 and quite nationally known, getting wide media coverage for his popular and successful technique (the Heimlich Maneuver) of abdominal thrusts which became a life-saving technique for stopping choking. It was July, 1979, and I was working with Chicago's then Office for Senior Citizens and Handicapped.I attended the annual Illinois Department on Aging convention, held in Peoria, to gather information and to... continue reading

This last Spring we were able to take the trip of a lifetime to the Cook Islands in the South Pacific - and it was paid for entirely with photography money. It wasn't all stock money (not even close), but it was sports teams, High School Seniors, Family Portraits and fine art sales. It took a year of savings, but with the goal of this trip in mind, it gave us the energy to keep going. The Cook Islands is a remarkable location, poised as Hawaii was 50 years ago. They are not kidding... continue reading

These are fairly basic ideas, but as photographers and designers we tend to get so excited about the location of the shoot that we forget that we don't actually have to stay in the immediate area. This applies mostly to city travel. We try to choose cities that have good inexpensive public transportation.Recently, on a trip to New York to visit our daughter, we stayed in Brooklyn and had a delightful stay. She found us a fairly new budget motel in a block of all night tire shops. It turned out... continue reading
Last weekend, faced with wanting to get from Cary, North Carolina to Brooklyn to visit our daughter, my husband and I took the plunge and booked tickets on Amtrak. The main factors in our decision to take the train were the high cost and hassle of flying or driving to New York City. We took Amtrak from the Cary station to Penn Station, NY for $280 round trip for both of us! In many European countries, such as Denmark, train travel has long been the norm. That hasn't been the case here in the US for... continue reading
