Too much Photoshop?

A recent article (Too Much Photoshop)detailing how a winning photo had been disqualified because of too much post-editing made me wonder about my own post philosophy. In this shot of a modern building, for example, I decided to create a composite and added a plane over the building to add oomph to the picture. I don't feel any compunction about doing this since the intent was not to deceive but to enhance the image.I suppose for purists, the less retouching the better. And, in some regard,... continue reading

The Most Important Things About Photoshop All Beginners Must Know

So there I was, staring at my computer monitor and looking at the family picture I had taken hours earlier. Grandma and Grandpa, Mom and Dad, Sis and her boyfriend, my little brother and the dog. In the background was our house, an old mobile home in the trailer park. The picture was a disaster. Grandma looked like she was wearing a fright wig, lots of hairs standing straight up. Grandpa had a big toothy grin except for the toothy part as he had forgotten to put in his teeth. Mom's teeth were all... continue reading

Stocking Christmas Images

Summer's not even over yet and you're thinking about Christmas?Yup.In fact I might be too late already for Christmas images. This year the Christmas buying season is bound to be much more compressed I think because of the big November U.S. presidential election. But consider this.Yesterday I was in Walmart and the stockers were unboxing Christmas decorations.I was shopping for some Halloween props and I thought the picking were a bit slim and already they were putting up the Christmas... continue reading

Take aways from photography workshop

From my own mistakes:make sure to pack your tripod and always double check your camera settings before a shoot.Grrrrrrr....nuff said.Class 1 Photographing Small Children.I am hoping this class will help me do justice to my grandchildren when I photograph them.Sometimes kneeling isn't good enough.Eye level might mean crawling on your belly.Pose your subjects so their eyes are at the same focal length for proper focus when using shallow DoF.Use stairs to even heights out when working... continue reading

Photoshop Lightroom 4

First, let me explain my experience with post-processing to give you an idea of my skill level.I began with Photoshop 3 with a little instruction from a colleague and upgraded to Photoshop 4 when I had the opportunity a little later on.In time, I felt Photoshop was just too vast to learn fluently with the little time I could allocate to photography and especially post-processing.However, I found most of the changes I cared about were within the Camera RAW plugin found within all versions of... continue reading

Using masks in Photoshop to create images

To create the image here I used three subjects then using masks in Photoshop merged them into one layer. First I photographed the hand in front of a white background, the water splash, and lastly I had an image of a goldfish that I isolated from the background with the selection tool, it really wasn't that hard.Next I assembled them in order, hand as background, water splash, and lastly the fish. Then I just activated the water splash layer and added a "mask" ( it's in your layer pallette and... continue reading

How to tie perfect knot on syringe needle? - Secret revealed

This image - I had it on my mind for a longer time - a shoot of a syringe with perfect knot tied on the needle - kind of "Stop taking drugs" concept... - but there was tiny little obstacle to solve - how to tie a perfect knot on a piece of fragile stiff and yet still hollow medical needle? It was clear to me, that I will have to do some Photoshop instead of twisting the needle...But after that I came across some collage with 3D rendered metal pipes tied into knot and simply - it did not feel... continue reading
