I study a portfolio every weekend and I thought I'd share what I study. Not all of it, only some parts of it. I don't pick up images or artists from the editor's choice collection of featured photographers collection either....which means that the portfolios I pick are one of the least likely ones to be noticed by us contributors but they do have a crazy number of sales. Some of you may find this useful.I choose portfolios based on these points:- Artists with no message board activity- With... continue reading

When we are starters at micro stock, one of the things we must do to learn more about stock image industry is to study the database to see what is uploaded, what sells better, what are the current trends and so on.This cannot be achieved in one day or a week, it is more a continuous work we all must do while we are shooting, editing, drawing, uploading, keyworing and doing all other necessary work. One of the errors I have made when I started was to assume that images with some or many sales... continue reading
Everyone I meet believes they are an expert photographer. It seems that the ownership of a camera and the expertise to use it appropriately can both be purchased from the store at the same time. Sadly, I didn't get the joint package. I had to study, practice, spend time reviewing, reading, trying, experimenting and learning before I became even half passable. All of this work has shown me that I am nowhere near 'best in class' and that I still have an awful lot more work to do.So why does... continue reading
Mangostock/Mauricio Jordan De Souza Coelho joined our community in 2008 and his is perhaps one of the best examples of the rigorous, disciplined, self-taught photographer whose great portfolio is the result of both talent and hard work. Very much like an assiduous researcher, he confesses having spent a great deal of time to study the stock industry and trends before actually shooting. We believe this prep period has served its purpose. Mauricio's view is a bird's eye view on the whole image production... continue reading
Well, I took the leap and clicked the "ok to offer free if not accepted" button on my submit page, and wa-la, suddenly there were 4 free pictures offered by me.And, since I am only 3 months old, I still don't really know what I am doing, so most of this is experimental.I see some pros/cons offered by other contributors but I really don't know what to think....I guess we will find out. So much to learn...such a tall hill to climb, but I sure am having a great time!! Next step: to see if I want... continue reading
Ever wanted to know more about what your CAMERA did to your photo? You know what YOU did but there was more? There is the basic metadata (EXIF-Exchangeable image file format, IPTC-International Press Telecommunications Council) exposed through tools like Lightroom but there is more that can be accessed. There is a free tool written by Phil Harvey that extracts a lot more detail than you would otherwise see. I have played with this tool over the past few years and it has kept up with new camera... continue reading
