Mount Pico (Portuguese: Montanha do Pico) is a stratovolcano located on Pico Island, in the mid-Atlantic archipelago of the Azores. It is the highest mountain of Portugal, at 2,351 meters (7,713 ft) above sea level, and is one of the highest Atlantic mountains; it is more than twice the elevation of any other peak in the Azores.Historical eruptions of Pico have occurred from vents on its flanks rather than the summit crater. Kelimutu is active volcano with three colorful lakes on island Flores near by village Moni (Indonesia). If you want to see them in the best light you have to leave at 4 a.m. We rented a motorbike so we were not depended on other people.By the parking lot there is a small market. There I have drunk the best coffee that the old woman seller had made herself. But you have to have good luck - there is more sellers and not everyone has as good coffee as the one. Good luck ;-).Everything went well.... continue reading

Iceland is that remote island we always imagine sitting in a precarious equilibrium between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean, where volcanoes erupt with the vengeance of the old Gods of Valhalla. But Iceland is also a country of wonders, where the Aurora Borealis puts on an incredible show and nature is at its best.If you plant to visit you will certainly step of the plane in Reykjavík, the world's northernmost capital of a sovereign state.Reykjavík is believed to be the location of... continue reading
I'm glad I reached the goal of 500 uploaded images, utilising the last fifty pictures taken this summer during a trip to Iceland. For those, like me, does not have the courage to face the exploration of the interior of this magnificent volcanic island with a jeep and hiking equipment, remains the option of simply doing the island tour with a regular car. I think most of the Iceland attractions can be seen even just doing this ride along almost the entire circumference of the island.Arriving... continue reading

This month I had the pleasure of reaching a total of 400 downloads on Dreamstime. The images that did it were two of the seafront at Mandraki on the Greek island of Nisyros. They sold at the same time to (I assume) the same buyer so jointly get the award as sale number 400.For anyone not familiar with this Aegean island, one of its main attractions is the still active volcano where you can walk down to the surface of the crater. Just beware of the sudden jets of steam that catch out unwary tourists.... continue reading
Last weekend we had a volcanic eruption here in Iceland.A place in Vatnajokull glacier called Grimsvotn had erupted with massive ash clouds bursting from the crater.Unfortunately this was no tourist show and the ash spread very far and like last year interrupted flight plans across Europe though not as seriously as last year. When I woke up monday morning to go to the gym I too had a present waiting for me. The ash cloud had reached the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik, and the thin ash layer was... continue reading
In the past week I was able to visit the destruction zone around the Merapi Volcano in Central Java, Indonesia. As a photographer, what struck me was the black and white world I encountered.I enclose this image as an example.I haven't changed a single level - just all the colour (and life) has vanished from this village. This house was 14km from the volcano. It was thought safe.In fact people from the 0-10km zone had been moved here for safety. Then the area was hit by a pyroclastic... continue reading
