Secrets to following the numbers

I finally crossed the threshold into 100 x 2. I have over one hundred images uploaded and over one hundred sales. It feels good to have achieved my initial goal. However, as I look at the numbers I discover something more interesting.

My recent discovery is that 7 out of my top 10 images are illustrations. This has caused me some pause. A wise person once told me that if you work on your weaknesses that you will only have stronger weaknesses. However, if you work on your strengths you will truly shine. Keeping this in mind, I look over my images with a critical eye.

I almost fall for the old voices that we have all heard. The voices that say we are not good enough to do this or that. We all have those voices.

My hard drive is clogged with images. Images that aren't keyworded. Images that aren't noise reduced. Images that are perfectly viable for stock photography. Images that I truly loved taking.

Within an hour I have realized that the numbers don't speak for themselves. You have to speak for them.

I can slant these numbers any way that I want. I could look at them and say, obviously I should focus on illustrations. On the other hand, getting those images that I have taken uploaded could pay off too. I resolve to upload more photographs regardless of the current numbers.

What are your numbers telling you?

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Woodenboy - when you make sales there are statistics you can view. I looked at my best sellers and 7 of 10 are illustrations.

Illustrations are what is selling for me. Fortunately, this is what I love to do. I use photographic elements in my compositions, so I really am getting the most out of both images and illustrations. I am very happy with my sales here so far, so, I have to let the numbers speak for themselves. Your illustrations are really good, you should always let that creative side shine through, edit the images in between. Lots of luck to you.

My numbers tell me that there is a need for quality shots of everyday items... It is a tough call whether you focus on what you are selling most of, or developing the things you aren't selling. So far I've taken the track of working on the strengths most of the time.

My numbers are telling me that I do not upload enough images... Maybe even that I'm not taking enough images.

I reckon that you should probably upload as many images as possible, and then for a while focus a bit more on illustrations, just to see if the trend you noticed continues.
