Three ways to find real people that will model for you

Do you want to shoot stock shots of people? Can you afford to pay a model? Me neither! So I decided to try to think of ways to get people to model for free without relying too much on friends and family Here are some ideas I had.

1) Set up a joint make over party with an Avon or Mary Kay rep. Let her do facials and offer to take after pictures. The partiers can have free digital images in exchange for a model release .

2) Offer to set up in a small area of a local salon the day before a big high school dance and take pictures of interested salon clients. Same deal, a free set of digital images for a model release. They can advertise your service as an advantage to choosing them over a competitor.

3) Barter with a personal trainer in your area to take pictures for their website in exchange for a model release .

I think you get the idea, all of these will work better if you approach people you know and trust. Think creatively-who do you know that you could set up a win-win relationship with? If you have ideas that have worked for you, please share them in the comments. Thanks!

Alvera, good point. Since I just do stock as of now, I hadn't thought of that. But it could hurt someone who also sells for personal use. What do others think?

1) "The partiers can have free digital images in exchange for a model release" and the pictures will be on FB page next day and downloaded from there for free.
2) Same idea.

Really good comments and helpful hints below-thank you for sharing. I am not going to do this again until I get my lighting skills up to snuff and figure out how to produce smashing portraits. There is also Model Mayhem, site were aspiring models gather. I just think it would be easier to start with my own friends. For example, a close friend is a Mary Kay rep and my daughter and her friends would LOVE to do a party like this.

Just for the record, it's called FTP or TFD (time for prints or time for disk) in which the model gives her time in exchange for photos for her portfolio. There's a lot of new models that need to develop a port but have no money to pay for shots. If you put up a notice in a college or highschool or at a theatre where young actors frequent it helps as well. Actors are especially good as they are used to performing under pressure.

There's also Craig's List. Run an ad explaining that you'll shoot head shots and other portfolio shots for the model to use in their professional portfolio that they can use to get paid modeling gigs. It's a trade-off. It costs a lot of money for a model to get professional heads shots. So you get the stock images and the model gets some awesome photos for their portfolio. I tried this once when I first got into photography and got a really pretty amateur model that was willing to do a shoot in trade for photos for her. I need to do that again!

Thank you to everyone. Digitalexpressionimages-good point! Elifranssens, I had a friend that took pictures and signed a release. I did explain the release to her. I wasn't that happy with the pictures, so I am going to work on lighting, etc. a bit more before I try again. I will be more assertive about where the shoot takes place next time too. We wound up doing it in a Hy-Vee eating area. Not the best light to work with :-)

It's also very important that you explain exactly why you need a model release signed. If they don't understand that you sell stock and their image may appear in ads it's deceptive and they could contest the contract.

Have you tried... how did it go?

Great ideas! People always want free pictures and getting them to sign a model release is a great idea.
