The Church from the Hill
This gothic medieval church (initialy romano-catholic) in Sighisoara medieval city, is the third great saxon cathedral in Romania.
The Church from the Hill (Bergkirch in german) is an old saxon cathedral of Sighisoara (the third great church in Transylvania), built between 1345-1525. is with no doubt the most valuable architectonical monument of the city. This church is under St. Nicholas'patronage. The church includes the two older constructions on the superior plateau of the hill: a Romanic chapel and a quadrilateral dungeon. The monument is also valuable through the only one chapel known in Transylvania, situated under the choir and which contains tombs dating from the 16th - 18th centuries. The church was partially painted outwardly and completely inwardly. In 1776, it was decided to destroy the old painting provided that exact copies should be achieved on parchment, which unfortunately were lost.
There were kept inside rare pieces of religious sculpture and painting: the Gothic tabernacle made of stone with a jig sawed decor, the pulpit carved in 1480, and an old stone holy water front - the 15th century. St. Martin's polyptych shrine dates from the 14th century, and the wooden pews carved by Reychmut, from the 16th century.
Saint Joseph Roman-Catholic cathedral
Was built in 1894, after the demolishment of the Franciscan nuns'monastery, is situated on the North-Eastern side of the city, close to the precinct wall. Built in an eclectic style by the architect Letz, native from Sighisoara, the Church underwent internal repairs after the fire of 22nd Mars 1983. The present organon was bought from a Saxon church in the neighbourhood and was erected by Karl Einschenk in 1908.
Medieval streets in Sighisoara
Founded by German craftsmen and merchants known as the Saxons of Transylvania, Sighisoara is a fine example of a small, fortified medieval town. This burg played an important strategic and commercial role on the fringes of central Europe for several centuries.
