What do they want? - Dreamstime

Hello I am very new here and I have been wandering what kind of photos sell and in general get accepted.

From personal experience I'd rule out sunset photos.

I would love to hear your most honest opinion.

(i could not upload my rejected sunset photo, damn)

Interesting comments and something that goes through my mind regularly. Sadly, I don't have a magic formula and am only learning through trial and error.

well sunsets do not sell anymore :(
Think about the photos that you see on ad's in news papers, think about blogs, staf that you see there will sell.

Read the book by Ellen Boughn "Microstock Money Shots". The last paper edition is 2 years old but I honestly don't think that the microstock market has changed that much since then. It helped me. Mind you, I am still a new comer here :-)

For what it's worth, my three best selling level 4 images are all editorial: a hand holding an AT&T Smartphone, the front of a WalMart store, and a hand holding credit cards. Editorial images are current and I think, in demand.

Sunsets is a good subject; but I think that, if the subject you choose is not really very special, unique or rare, is better not limit the portfolio to a single subject, but insert a diversity of subjects.

I write quite a lot on my site about this, though there are a load of posts about it, you may want to start with this one:

I guess almost any kind of image can be sell... There are people looking for everything, as long as it has quality and it is original.

This is a very interesting subject, and many articles have been written on this. What most people say (and what's probably true) is that photos that are able to depict a concept in a good way are those more suitable to be sold.
In any case, you may want to have a lot of "diversity" in your portfolio: images with people, images that express concepts, backgrounds...a little of everything :)))
