What do you think about black background?

Recently I have read several materials about using black background. Not a long time ago, I have tried to take photos with black background.

For example in case of this image of children

What I like about the black background the best is the simple and obvious fact that one doesn

And yet, I must say, I don

The materials I have read made me think about the black background a lot. I have it of course, but it lies down under my other kinds of backgrounds. Maybe it is a question of time when black background will be again in “fashion”? Or maybe it is used and requested and I am instinctively attracted by images with light background as I really love light pastel colors and use them in my images?

What about you? Do you like black background? Do you use it often or rarely? Maybe your bestseller-image is exactly with elegant black background. I wish you good luck and inspiration for photos of such kind!

This your answer makes me feel still more that black background is much prefered by artist, like you - creating artwork for theater. It sound very interesting, I wish you a lot of successes! While white background is prefered by designers working for magazines. I personally have minority photos with black background, but those ones I like for a special artistic, even a little mystical atmosphere :-)

I lprefer black backgrounds, but they pose a few problems in my line of work. I create artwork for a theatre. A black background costs more to print on a traditional poster. Black backgrounds make it harder to work with stock images, but I still like the look. And some people think the whole thing looks funereal. But I like the look.

I personally prefer white isolated images, since most of my webdesigns are white. However, there are a number of web designers that build with a black background in mind.

I really like the lobster over the black background and I muast add one thing - it so more interesting and beautiful with water drops. The water drops makes the image great.

Hello, Frenk and Danielle, IMHO, also flowers are great with black background. I have made a pink lily with black background and it turns to be so elegant... however as I said, the black background looks to me more serious... not depressing.

I guess black backgrounds are more difficult to isalote objects from since shadows are the way to get depth into any image but is also thje same color as the background, in this case. Most photographers make sure, when shooting on white, to avoid overlighting 255 on the subject and therefor make it easier to isolate. I guess this makes a white background more interesting for any buyer that needs to isolate an object.
Black backs are in this case only used by us when the feel of the photo benefits from it. So if looking for a depressing feel or when shooting low kay nudes. Since nudes are not among the best selling stock photographs we are keeping these from stock ans sell them as art.

I agree that black background makes a wonderful contrast with the photo "subject". Perhaps it is the reason why I consider it more artistic

I would think it would depend on the subject and the feeling your trying to create? This is something I really need to learn about.

I have found that using a black, or other colors, for a background can add to the photograph. If you are looking to take photographs of objects that can be embedded into future creations, white definately works the best, since it is easier to crop around a high-contrast edge. However, images where you wish to capture strong emotions or thought concepts can be greatly enhanced by a black background, or other colored background that contrasts with the image at-hand.
