"Your text HERE" - a good idea?

In the above thread there is a discussion on how to remove the text from the concerned image. Now what I was wondering about is, why do people put that thing there anyway? That was quite a nice customer (or a desperate customer) who bought that file. Even if you do have the best greeting card background in the whole website and the customer has no idea how to remove your "Your text here" guide, why would the file be bought? They'd go look for something else.

I have read some threads in the past about this issue, "Should I write your text here, etc stuff?" Answer is "usually don't". If you do feel seriously that you need text in there, then do it.

All our customers aren't web designers or experts in Photoshop. They can't flip the photos or use eraser in paint. They are mostly exactly "end users" who need the end image. By end image, they mean they want to use it right away. That is quite obvious in the above thread and I thought I should share that because you might all be losing on sales for such little reasons.

Another quite funny thing is, I got this sold twice (total of 8+5 credits spent) on the inverted earth image. Obviously enough, if the user was a web designer or experienced user, he/she would never buy this particular photo. They would just buy something in level 0, there are hundreds of earths from cracking earths to rising earths in level 0 range. And then all they have to do is open it in paint and flip vertically! But they didn't do that. Instead someone bought a level 2 image of an inverted earth.

So by this article I just mean to say, produce stuff that doesn't need editing for removing stuff. Rather let it stay empty. It might tempt someone to add text there. Not that the customers don't know anything - there are very experienced designers out here looking for our photos who could change an image beyond recognition in a few minutes, but there are simple end users too who just want the right image, EXACTLY the right image. So let's make it good for both the parties.

NOTE: Please don't upload inverted planets or any inverted things at all. This idea is my intellectual property.

(kidding, but seriously let me enjoy this inverted image discovery and have some more sales. Inverted coffee coming up!)

Maybe you could just think who would buy your image most probably?
Suppose it is basically a blog type image, don't add text.
And if it is something like a template, etc, then add text.

Thanks for your input Cogent.
We understand your argument, but what you seem not to be considering is that by adding "example texts" in areas not covered by the main subject matter - eg out of the composition -, you are artificially increasing the size of the whole image thus affecting its pricing - not to mention that most of the times designers won't be able to edit such texts, and probabilities they will use such images "as is" is generally low. So, it's all about including some visual added value, turning images more "catchy" when they should "speak" by it-selves. We call it concept, no need for extra "topping". :)

Also, please let us assume that when searching for a particular image, almost all designers already have a pretty good idea on how to use it, and believe me, most of them prefer to do their own home work with graphics and lettering. Naturally, illustrations are another story, still there are cases when such texts are absolutely redundant/irrelevant.

In regard to the question about adding text - the clear majority of my best sellers (not here) all have text in the white space. I have to modify the images to submit here (usually) as they get rejected for too much white space. Sadly the same images do not sell well here at all. I am a designer primarily and a photographer second. I tried to argue my point with the admins here but they think they know best. Actually the customers know best and they buy my images from other sites instead. Do I lose ? No. Does DT lose, yes. Their call, their mistake. Their loss. Now a just dont bother.

IF text is usefull and EASILY removable (only on blank zone, no gradients or textures, for example), i think this is a good feature. The rason is that the image appears in its complete aspect, then looks really more pleasant, and not with a blank portion (as the "incomplete" jobs).

Babar760, those who have the ability shoot those photos for us.
I'd still submit photos here if I were a millionair. It's more about competing and satisfaction of watching your work going somewhere than earning (my views).
If people who had money for a EOS 1D and 800 mm professional lens stopped shooting just because they have enough money for the gear...there wouldn't be anyone good at photography.

By adding YOUR TEXT here, we restrict the creativity of the designer or the buyer. As rightly commented by many learned personalities here that when there is a space in your image, we should let it to be the prerogative of the designer or the buyer to allow him/her to put some text or something else he/she desires, rather than directing him/her to write text on the space. I usually let thr space blank. But sometimes I put an elusive text (like happy mother's day) and these tend to sell better, because they give the idea on how they will look like when finished.

@Igordabari, I agree with that. That is exactly I said in the article that we should not USUALLY put text in there. There are certain things that would look totally incomplete without the text, like web templates and very specific greeting cards (not generic card backgrounds).
Adding text to give a feel of what it would look like is a good idea, but I'd still suggest that contributors with

Empty copy space (that can be filled by 'Your Text Here' or left empty) is created to insert there some text. That means that buyer has a tool to insert this text. But this means, in turn, that buyer is able to remove 'Your Text Here', as well.

It is extremely easy and person who is experienced in wroting FOR SURE should know how remove some elements from the image. Because both these operations represent the parts of the same skills.

So, I see no harm in this inscription. On my opinion, it isn't needed to show WHERE SOME TEXT FROM DESIGNER SHOULD BE PUT - it is visible without any inscription. It is needed to show HOW THE IMAGE WITH TEXT WILL LOOK. Which is important to realize when choosing image to upload it.

It's true all of our customers aren't web designers, but the customers who buy our expensive images are. I think most medium to maximum size images are bought by print or web designers who certainly are expert at Photoshop or Illustrator, etc. The small and extra small images are used mostly by bloggers or used in web ads that the user just wants to buy and paste. So if you have an interesting image, I don't think it matters much to the high-end user if you have "your text here" or not. The higher end user won't care. I think it's rather redundant to put "your text here" anyway when clearly they can see that there is room to put their text there! You don't need to tell them that. All you need to do is add "copy space" in the keywords.

I think you're right in what you say. I had the same doubt. Write Text or not to? I think it's best to leave it empty. Simpler for the customer and more likely to sell our image.
