New feature: put your image on the map

We released a new page that allows contributors to place their images (whenever relevant) on the world map. You can click the map, search for places of interest or simply paste GPS coordinates if you know them already. Powered by Google, both map and sattelite versions are available.

The new page can be accessed from the Edit Image page or from the Submission page via Geo-location / Insert manually. Simply select the image, click the map and hit SAVE.

In case your gear supports GPS data, we read your EXIF automatically so there's nothing else you should do.

In this stage, contributors are asked to begin locating their images from existing portfolios and at submission time. The data will be used to generate various buyer-oriented features in the near future.

I hope you enjoy it. Now excuse me, I have 2,500 images to tag :)

Great feature, will take a look now :-)

I don't understand what is this!

I can't select the same place for two different images? It would be nice if there was a batch selection option.

Thank you DT. Time to upgrade to a camera with GPS.

How can use this new feature?

That sounds interesting! It might require some time, but I guess it will be fun!

Great feature. I tagged both of my photos :) What about vectors :)

2500 imgages to tag? Waw! That's more than my DT portfolio!

Great thing! Thanks!

But I have 4 questions:

1) Is it possible to tag several images at once? Suppose, I took 5 photos being at the same place. Mass tagging feature would save a good deal of my time in this case.

2) What accuracy is supposed? I mean if two shots were taken from 2 different point 100 meters from each other. Should I tag them separately?

3) Is it considered to arrange some seller-oriented feature like a map on which location of my buyers would be displayed? I do not mean any significant information on buyers, but only geographical points which downloads were done from. It cold be easily done basing on IP's.

4) What about illustrations? Which GEO-point should be assigned to an image that represents some computer art? The place where I created it?

I think there should be some clear explanation concerning items (1), (2) and (4) just near the 'GEO-button' at 'edit-image-page'.

Thank you,

Igor

This feature is to be used for photos only. It cannot be used for illustrations. Please use the feature cautiously for photos taken in studios or indoors. Keep in mind that the purpose of this feature is first and foremost to allow a targeted search by location. Unless very relevant, do not add such indoor locations.

We will take the mass tagging suggestion into consideration and see if it is possible in the future. For the time being, if you have images taken in the same location, you can map only one file. Of course, it would be ideal to add the exact location to each and every file if there is a difference of 50, 100 m but it depends on the case. There are certain locations where 20 m can make a difference. :) - country borders for instance.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns into something for buyers :) I'll race you on the 2,500 files! I can think of a few things already:

1. Ability to change the pop up image list to only include those files that aren't tagged yet. It will get harder and harder to figure out which files you haven't tagged as you tag more.

2. Ability to not include the images in mapping. I think that many of us do a lot of shots where location is going to be 'my house' for a large number of shots :)

Thanks for you reply, Carmen. But what about my item#3? Let me remind:
