Description: Chingay is an annual festival held in Malaysia in celebration of the Chinese deities. It is a colorful and energetic parade that snakes through the city of Johor Bahru, a Malaysian city right on the border with Singapore, with 145 troupes displaying their mastery and skills of lion dances and acrobatic shows. The word Chingay originated from the Chinese communities of Southeast Asia; however, this name is mostly used by non-Chinese speaking people. The local Chinese community in Johor Bahru refers to the parade as ‘Parade of the Deities’ as the main theme of the festival is the procession of the Five Deities from the five main dialect-groups of Johor Bahru. The Chingay parade in Johor Bahru has been around for over 140 years. Chingay is also celebrated in the neighboring city of Singapore as well as in the historic city of George Town on the island of Penang.
