Stage, screen, and television actress and civil rights activist Ruby Dee is pictured here at the Drury Lane East Theater in Chicago, Illinois, in 1980. Dee died in her home at New Rochelle, New York, at 91 on June 11, 2014. Dee won the National Board of Review Award in 1961 for her film performance in A Raisin in the Sun. She also won 2 Drama Desk Awards, an Obie, an Emmy, a Grammy, and 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards; one of which for Lifetime Achievement. During her 56-year marriage to actor Ossie Davis, the couple were prominent in numerous civil rights activities.
