Ditto :)

I wasn't saying that unless you diversify your sales will not get back to where they were and there's no need to get grumpy. The engine's relevancy is being restored so placement of your images will be the same. Furthermore, it is expected to still have sales with a different search algorithm, if the relevancy exists.

My suggestion was that you learn from this and try to expand your borders. You don't have to read this as a critique, but merely as a suggestion. I didn't check each of your portfolios so it might apply only to some of the posters here.

It is a fact that after any algorithm update a part of the contributors will see better sales, while the others will see lower sales due to placement. That's how the engine works. even if we strive to keep things for everyone.

No matter your current experience if you diversify you will gain a lot more sales, that's all. Any stock photography tutorial or book will tell you this, it's no secret.

Can you please give some details about how this search engine works?

On the other hand Achiles, if you are into a niche AND GET WELL KNOWN for your images at that niche, buyers will look into your portfolio directly when they need that kind of image (maybe coming from your tweets, facebook or your website), so the search engine positioning wont be as relevant.

Anyway, I understand what you mean, if a guy take images only of tomatoes and the search engine has a bug and doesnt understand the word tomatoes he will have no sales at all...

So, guys, lets get the dust out of our cameras and photograph, hum, potatoes :)

@ Herminutomo
1) The size of the portfolio has no relevance with sales or revenues, neither with the diversity. My portfolio is small but sales and revenue are very high compared to lots of others with a much larger portfolio.
2) Please clarify the 3rd world country issue??? Assuming, assuming...

I just want to make clear what my opinion is and I am free to do so. Has nothing to do with a cool head or not, just want to make my point, since I don't agree with the arguments of DT.
Has nothing to do with the risks of exclusivity. I expect a working system, backup etc. That's all and absolutely not in par with the benefits.

Could dreamstime answer better for the agency as someone is an exclusive photographer or not?

Excuse me but....what are we trying to solve here? Yes there is a problem in DT...but sh.t happens! It always will happen and people say that they are trying to figure it out! Everyone knows (especially admins) that I always have big arguements with Admins, but today please be patient and let them solve it. This is our home (as an exc. contributor) and we should not attack it...

By the way, "to diversify" means; not to put all your eggs in the same basket. So you can still have some eggs, if one of the baskets is broken.

I love dreamstime and and no one attacks only talk when we have the opportunity:)

I am a small part of dreamstime and to just worry when i see a lot of disgruntled people.

I don't understand this "attack" argument at all. As far as I see, people just reacted with some questions to one of the fresh Achilles' posts from which it was not clear how the new "relevancy" search will affect their placement in the search results, exclusive or not. That's it, contributors have the right to be informed. :)

There are thousands of members and millions of pictures, who knows how we are going to be affected individually :) let's wait and see...

Reading arguments here and looking at the portfolio / sales size, I am quite newbie / fresh to stock photography. But, I can tell for certain, March was way better for me, I have had good number of sells just in March. Late March / early April, when the something changes / problem started, and when I uploaded many good illustrations , I don't see any views and as a result sells. I can tell, something has changed in last week / first week of April, that result in very low visibility for me. Now is that due to exclusivity or anything else, not sure, but its not good for me.

It sounds to me that Serban is saying that in a couple of days time things will be more or less back to as it was before but that if we diversify then we won't be so affected when these problems happen again. So nothing to be concerned about in the long run of things.

hey guys, guess this thread has some interesting discussion now!

well from what i understand: the search engine "relevancy" part went bad, so DT switched to "best selling" as default, as a result new contributors will have lower sales, as their files are not the highest selling, and old files will jump back for the more experienced or older folks.

now, about niche, i think a niche photographer is better a quality in their respective niche, i can never dream of getting those nice shots some of you get, and i bet many of you may find my specialized renders hard to make, so i feel diversifying is ok, but most of us will have only X amount of diversity, which preserved the expertise and quality, specialization is the key to good quality, just what i feel, some people can be diverse and excellent too, but rarely!

now about third world: don't go with WHO or UN figures, if you want a life in 3rd world, you need $2000 to survive, and $4000 to live a decent life, Monthly for cities, deduct 20% for small towns, trust me, most of you do not know the 3rd world, i do because i live in one.

an apartment costs 100,000 at min, an independent will cost more than twice, and american sized home will cost close to a mn, that too on outskirts of a metro, not inside. a car is costlier, atleast 20% more than that of US.

Stock business is only viable after you expand your portfolio beyond 2000, and that can take more than an year or two

not that i feel it's peanuts, my portfolio is very important to me, and i appreciate the fact that microstock has given me the opportunity to reach out to people who are kind enough to appreciate my work and buy. and DT is the best site in the industry i could find.

still not complaining about the engine, you have to have other sources to live, and i have a couple, so hoping for the best, thanks all for reading

Taking chance of the waiting hours for the broken thumbnails to appear, I have to share with you one or two things about "relevancy" we talk here.

I used the search engine to find 2-3 images of mine.
Searching "white labrador retriever dog" which is exactly the title of my photo, about 1 week online, and by choosing "most relevant" as a method, i found it at 28th page, which mean NO SALES or MINIMUM chances!

Searching "plyer" i found "turntables", searching "paper clip" i found "bulbs" and in my search for some place i found EXACTLY the same image of a place TWICE !!!.
The one version is like out of the camera and the other is 1-2 clicks more exposure-saturation!! and from the same contributor!!!!

Meanwhile, files that - judging till before the ftp issue which i understand is a part of a bigger situation (search engine, ftp issues)- supposed to be for review after 2-3 days, they been reviewed (rejected or accepted) in a snatch!!! (i dont complain for that!)
And other files are still with no thumbs standing there.

I don't know if all those symptoms comes from the same cause ( algorithms, updates, relevancy or the universe ) and IT'S NOT MY JOB to know.

All i know is all these makes me having second thoughts about my decision to become exclusive,( i already am ). I just feel the ground a little unstable, if u know what i mean and i believe I'm not the only one. And to make my point is that, as another fellow contributor previous said, i just "expect a working system". ... for exclusives or not!

Thnx for reading, hope everything get back to normal soon, what ever it is normal.!

@Saap, take this as a friendly suggestion. The ground is never unstable in DT, I've been exc. here for 2 years and everything was working perfectly. Feel comfortable with your account and agency :) trust me...

I needed to write this, because I perfectly know how you feel :)) everything's gonna be alright...

(Wow I have never been so supportive to DT before LOL but that's the truth)

I am wondering if tbe IT people behind the algorithm will lose any fingers for this.

I'm down to three myself.
