Description: Functionalism in architecture, is the principle that architects should design a building based on the purpose of that building. The functionalistic style emerged in the late 1920´s and went strong in the 1930´s. Functionalism had the strongest influence in Europe, especially in Germany, Czechoslovakia, Netherlands, the USSR and the Nordic countries. Similar but with another definition is The International architectural Style that emerged in USA in the 1920s and 1930s. These architectural styles are still actual in contemporary Modern Architecture. Functionalism and International architectural styles are also commonly mixed. Functionalism is namned in many ways in different languages. In swedish ”Funkis” and ”Nyfunkis”.
