Gail Melville Shumway grew up In Lafayette, Indiana, with a love for art and nature.

Gail is a self-taught artist with many interests. Her drawings and paintings as a child led her to the world of nature and wildlife photography in 1985.

Her fascination for wildlife, especially butterflies and amphibians, has taken her to many parts of the United States, Ecuador, Peru, Trinidad, Costa Rica, Belize, Honduras, Panama, Guatemala and Southeast Asia.

In 1986 she was the Grand Prize and First Place winner of the International Wildlife Photography contest, and she also won National Awards in 1987 and 1988.

In 1990 she was invited to participate in the exhibition “Hunting With The Camera” in Vienna, Austria, and her images have been exhibited at the National History Museum in London.

In 1997 she received the Distinguished Achievement Award of the Educational Press Association of America for excellence in educational journalism.

Gail’s photographs have appeared on covers of National Geographic Explorer, National Geographic Kids, National Wildlife, International Wildlife, Ranger Rick magazines, on billboards, greeting cards, puzzles, in editorials, books, and advertisements, and her image of a swallowtail butterfly was displayed in the entrance of the White House. Gail won four awards in the 2007 Pilsner Urquell International photography Competition and four awards and a third place in the 2008 competition.

A few of the clients who have used her work are: Hallmark, American Greetings, MICROSOFT, Encyclopedia Britannica, Merrill Lynch,
NBC News, New York, Barnes and Noble, VOGUE, Harper Collins, Cosmopolitan Magazine, Wal-Mart, Coca Cola, Dorling Kindersley Ltd., Wondertime Magazine/Disney Publication, Popular Science Magazine and the Ellen De Generes Show.

Many of Gail’s images are featured in the book The World’s Most Spectacular Reptiles and Amphibians that won best content award by the National Association of independent Publishers.

Her work has been published in over 50 countries.
