Gneiss from Karelia. This high-grade metamorphic rock is part of the core of the Baltica - an ancient continent which is geological center of Europe. The rock sample formed during an orogenic episode in the Proterozoic. Its composition is equivalent to most granites: K-feldspar (red), quartz (gray), biotite (black). The width of the specimen is 11 cm.
