South African Ground Squirrel digs a complicated network of burrows, which may be shared with meerkats and yellow mongoose. Males and females live in separate social group, meeting up only to breed. It produces a long whine as an alarm call. Habitat: Arid countryside with compacted sandy areas Diet: Grass, roots, bulbs, seeds, fruit and insects.
