The Bauta. Nowadays just a typical Venetian Carnival mask, but back in the day it was used by man and women alike when they wanted to go about town and maintain their anonymity, be it because they were going gambling, visiting prostitutes or attending a ball without their spouse. It was worn with a tricorn hat and a veil around the mask (and covering the eyes), giving the wearer complete anonymity. The particular shape of the mask serves two purposes: it modifies the wearer's voice, all by allowing him/her to eat and drink without having to remove it.
