Map Butterfly, Summer brood (Araschnia levana L., 1758) (f. prorsa L.). This is an unusual species. It is the only species in Europe with strongly marked seasonal differences. The Spring (f. levana) and Summer (f. prorsa) broods are very different. This is a summer specimen, which looks a little like a small version of a White admiral (Limenitis camilla). Flowerhead of Cirsium arvense (Canada Thistle, Creeping Thistle, Californian Thistle), female.
